POSITION OVERVIEW
This role demands a high level of technical expertise and the application of that expertise to laboratory testing, clinical significance, and intricate problem-solving capabilities.
This position acts as a resource within the department, ensuring compliance with all relevant laboratory accreditation and regulatory standards (e.g., CLIA '88, JCAHO, CAP, OSHA).
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conducts laboratory tests accurately and promptly in accordance with established protocols and performance benchmarks. Responsible for the initiation, calibration, and precision of procedures and instruments. Engages in problem-solving initiatives within the department, utilizing advanced decision-making skills. Exhibits comprehensive knowledge and application of all computer systems utilized in the laboratory. Demonstrates a profound understanding of theory and clinical relevance in testing. Aids in maintaining compliance with accreditation and regulatory standards. Capable of assuming leadership responsibilities in the absence of departmental leadership.
- Identifies, verifies, and assists in monitoring abnormal patient and/or quality control results. Ensures the accuracy of test outcomes. Participates in identifying and documenting deviations from established procedures. Engages in departmental and system-wide process improvement and quality assurance initiatives, including monitoring productivity and quality indicators.
- Oversees inventory management and contributes to financial reporting for the department. Actively participates in financial performance improvements to reduce costs, enhance productivity, and elevate service quality.
- Contributes to additional departmental or system projects. Involved in training new department staff. Actively participates in at least one committee or team or engages in at least one special project as identified by department management. Aware of the medical/legal implications of professional actions. Assists in the orientation, training, and competency assessment of new employees. Provides input for competency evaluations and annual assessments within appropriate timelines. Completes training modules for newly hired or transferred personnel. Self-motivated.
- Serves as a departmental resource by providing educational information to both internal and external stakeholders. Demonstrates advanced verbal and written communication skills. Attends and participates in staff meetings. Exhibits mentoring and coaching abilities, fostering a constructive environment that promotes learning and development.

Department and System Operations
Internal Stakeholders:
System employees, physicians, nursing staff. External Stakeholders - Nurses, physicians, office personnel, vendors, service representatives, etc. Involved in interdepartmental communication and collaboration.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS
Ability to stand, walk, bend, squat, reach, and stretch frequently.
Utilize material handling equipment to push/pull up to 75 pounds and required to lift, push, and/or pull up to 25 pounds.
Requires manual dexterity. Must adhere to standard precautions due to potential exposure to blood and body fluids, as well as chemical, electrical, and biological hazards. Ability to distinguish colors and to quickly follow directions and assimilate instructions. Requires proficiency in using personal computers, printers, copiers, telephones, fax machines, and department-specific equipment.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's Degree in clinical laboratory science/medical technology, OR a BS degree in chemical, physical, or biological science along with a certificate of completion of a Categorical equivalent of MLS program, OR a Bachelor's Degree in chemical, physical, or biological science with certification (MLS or categorical).
Students may be employed at the equivalent job title in clinical laboratory science under specific conditions: the student must be enrolled in a clinically recognized program, complete their clinical rotation in the core area prior to working in that area, and finish the program within one year of hire.
Foreign-educated candidates must provide a detailed credential evaluation from a recognized credentialing agency.
For certain specialty disciplines (e.g., Toxicology, Clinical Mass Spectrometry) where no certification is available, a Bachelor's Degree with one year of experience in that discipline is required. Individuals with specialty certification may only work in their specialty area.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
MT or categorical certification (ASCP, AMT, HEW, AAB).
