The Medical Support Specialist (MSS) is tasked with executing routine medical and testing procedures under the direct oversight of the attending clinician, while also providing support in various areas of the facility as required, including patient registration and referral management. This position demands efficient and precise delivery of personalized patient care in a dynamic environment. The MSS guarantees that every patient receives high-quality clinical attention and enjoys an exceptional experience from courteous, skilled colleagues.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct Department of Transportation (DOT) and Non-DOT drug and alcohol assessments
  • Prepare patients for physical evaluations, including measuring vital signs and performing necessary ancillary tests such as vaccinations, injections, phlebotomy, pulmonary function tests, audiograms, and respirator fit tests
  • Execute rapid screening assessments (influenza, strep, mono, glucose)
  • Assist healthcare providers during examinations and treatments
  • Carry out routine medical tasks as directed by the attending clinician and triage urgent patients as necessary
  • Prepare and assist the clinician with procedural setups and injury management
  • Apply dressings, bandages, and splints as instructed by the clinician
  • Dispense medications and durable medical equipment as prescribed by the clinician in compliance with state regulations
  • Perform quality assurance checks on medical equipment and devices, as well as testing processes utilized in the center
  • Maintain inventory, clean examination rooms and equipment, and restock supplies
  • Operate and maintain all medical devices and equipment, ensuring proper calibration and record-keeping in line with current policies and procedures
  • Promptly inform the supervisor of any equipment malfunctions, supply shortages, or operational issues
  • Collaborate with center leadership to assist with patient flow and volume management
  • Keep patients informed about expected wait times throughout their visit
  • Manage clerical duties in both front and back office settings related to patient care and accurate record-keeping
  • Ensure documentation accuracy
  • Perform front office responsibilities: greet patients, obtain authorizations, check patients in/out, communicate wait times, manage a multi-line phone system, and distribute employer results/paperwork as necessary
  • Adhere to HIPAA regulations and safety protocols
  • Attend center staff meetings or huddles as required
  • Help maintain a tidy, clean, and organized facility
  • Complete any required training, including monthly clinical competency training

Qualifications

Education Level: Vocational/Technical/Business School

  • Medical Assistant Certification from an accredited institution (credentials in the state of employment in accordance with state requirements and applicable regulations) or Military Medical Specialist with current Medical Assistant credentials in the state of employment in accordance with state requirements and applicable regulations

Job-Related Experience

  • Typically possesses at least six months or more of medical assistant experience
  • Familiarity with medical procedures and terminology
  • Working knowledge of occupational medicine requirements (state-specific) preferred

  • Must engage in initial and ongoing training as required
  • Obtain all necessary certifications required of Medical Support Specialists, including but not limited to Drug Screen Collection, Breath Alcohol Certification, Hair and Oral Fluids Collection
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, Outlook, and data entry into various systems/applications
