Position Overview

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a meticulous and collaborative Specialist in Works on Paper to contribute to a significant project aimed at cataloging and digitizing an extensive collection of artworks on paper.

Key Responsibilities:

This role entails managing and executing daily collection management tasks associated with a grant project focused on identifying, cataloging, and digitizing a substantial collection of works on paper. The selected candidate will:

  • Oversee object identification and retrieval, ensuring accurate verification of object locations and generating comprehensive object lists using the museum's collection management system.
  • Create new object records or verify existing records, ensuring they include essential details such as maker information, title, date, measurements, and any relevant marks or attributes.
  • Coordinate the movement of artworks for photography and digitization, maintaining meticulous documentation.
  • Rehouse artworks into appropriate storage solutions and identify items requiring conservation treatment.
  • Facilitate curatorial reviews of object records and conduct necessary research related to objects, artists, exhibitions, and provenance.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A Master's degree in art history or museum studies.
  • Prior experience in cataloging works on paper.
  • Familiarity with data entry in collections management systems and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong written communication skills and exceptional attention to detail.
  • The ability to adhere to protocols for handling delicate artworks with care.

Additional Considerations:

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Graduate-level coursework or curatorial experience focused on printmaking history, particularly in American or European art.
  • Experience identifying various printmaking processes.
  • A minimum of two years of cumulative experience cataloging works on paper, including prints.
  • Reading proficiency in French, German, Italian, or Dutch.
