Position Overview
The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Curator of Arts Collections to join our esteemed Libraries. This role is pivotal within the Special Collections and Archives (SCA) department, fostering a collaborative atmosphere. The Curator will be responsible for the stewardship, promotion, and development of arts-related special collections, which encompass a diverse array of materials including book art, comic arts, and various works of art.

Key Responsibilities
The Curator will engage in a variety of tasks, including but not limited to:
  • Providing curatorial support that enhances access and usage of the collections.
  • Overseeing collection development and nurturing donor relationships.
  • Contributing to the management of collection development funds and research services.
  • Collaborating with colleagues to formulate strategic initiatives and policies.
  • Building and managing a distinguished collection of arts-focused materials that support educational and scholarly endeavors.
  • Engaging with vendors, artists, and donors to acquire relevant collection materials.
  • Coordinating outreach programs to promote the collections through exhibitions and presentations.
  • Facilitating research consultations and educational programs for students and faculty.
  • Supervising student workers and interns involved in arts-related projects.

Qualifications
Applicants should possess:
  • An ALA-accredited graduate degree or a relevant graduate degree.
  • A background or strong interest in art, art history, book arts, or related fields.
  • A commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment.

Preferred Qualifications
While not mandatory, the following qualifications are advantageous:
  • Relevant coursework or experience in art-related subjects.
  • Curatorial experience in a museum or library setting.
  • Strong communication skills to effectively engage with a diverse audience.
  • Experience in managing a collections budget.
