Position Overview

Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana stands as the foremost hunger relief organization in the state, playing a pivotal role within the Feeding America Network. Beyond essential hunger relief initiatives across our extensive service area, we also manage Fresh Connect Central, a regional produce cooperative, and serve as a critical site for disaster response operations.

Work Schedule: This role requires availability for two evenings and one Saturday each month, with flexible scheduling options available during weekdays.

Role Objective: The Volunteer Engagement Manager is dedicated to the recruitment, coordination, and oversight of volunteers, ensuring they receive an exceptional volunteer experience. This position is crucial in communicating the significant impact volunteers have on our mission while supporting the vital operational functions they provide. The Coordinator will implement strategic directions set by the Director of Volunteer Programs to ensure the successful engagement of community volunteers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and enhance the volunteer program, focusing on recruitment, training, placement, retention, and recognition of volunteers.
  • Manage scheduling for community groups and coordinate volunteer inquiries through various communication channels.
  • Facilitate on-site volunteer coordination, leading orientations and ensuring effective communication with staff supervisors.
  • Guide volunteers in food processing projects to prepare items for distribution.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and regulations related to food handling.
  • Capture and document volunteer activities through photography for promotional purposes.
  • Support the Director in engaging youth and adaptive volunteers through skill development programs.
  • Assist in creating virtual engagement opportunities for volunteers and community members.
  • Collaborate with the Director to maintain volunteer support and cross-train for operational coverage.
  • Manage the Volunteer Hub database to maintain accurate records of volunteer information and engagement metrics.
  • Conduct tours for prospective volunteers and stakeholders.
  • Represent the organization at recruitment fairs and community events.
  • Maintain community engagement kits for outreach events.
  • Participate in professional development to enhance skills and knowledge in volunteer management.
  • Stay informed about trends in volunteerism and implement best practices.
  • Act as a liaison between volunteers and staff, ensuring effective communication.
  • Document volunteer stories to promote awareness of the organization’s mission.
  • Gather and analyze volunteer feedback through surveys and debrief sessions.
  • Recognize volunteer contributions and manage the rewards program.
  • Address conflicts involving volunteers and implement necessary actions.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Experience in volunteer management is essential.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Customer service experience is beneficial.
  • A valid driver's license and a clean driving record are necessary.
  • Certification as a Volunteer Administrator is advantageous but not mandatory.
  • Physical ability to lift and move items as required.
  • Proficiency in using office software applications.

  • This position is on-site and involves both office and warehouse settings.
  • Regular weekend and evening work may be required.
