Creative Youth Engagement Instructor

Program Overview:
The ArtReach initiative is a community-oriented, after-school arts education program designed for young individuals residing in underprivileged neighborhoods of the greater Indianapolis area. Instructors in the ArtReach program are responsible for developing and executing engaging lesson plans that align with modern principles of Discipline-Based Art Education (DBAE). They strive to create a nurturing, inclusive, and secure environment that promotes self-expression, peer interaction, exploration, and hands-on learning experiences.
Role Summary:
The Indianapolis Art Center is dedicated to fostering lifelong learning through interactive art classes and activities. These programs cater to a diverse range of ages, audiences, and skill levels. An ArtReach instructor conducts classes at various community centers and educational institutions, with occasional sessions at the Art Center itself. Instructors play a vital role in enhancing student education by customizing course content, ensuring a supportive learning atmosphere, and keeping students informed about various initiatives and opportunities offered by the Art Center.
Key Responsibilities:
- Course Preparation: Develop lesson plans that emphasize art creation, art history, aesthetics, and critique, while fostering dialogue and community engagement.
- Conduct research on art, artists, and cultural topics relevant to the curriculum, focusing on both historical and contemporary subjects.
- Prepare necessary art examples, including presentations, demonstrations, and visual aids.
- Adapt lessons to cater to the specific needs of students and the community.
- Manage time efficiently to meet educational objectives.
- Document class outcomes accurately, including attendance and student feedback.
Resource Management:
- Maintain a budget for materials throughout the semester.
- Communicate regularly with the Outreach Coordinator regarding material requirements.
- Transport art supplies and student artwork between the Art Center and partner locations.
- Ensure proper handling and management of all materials and equipment.
- Collaborate with students to establish expectations for material care and cleanup.
- Participate in equipment safety training as needed.
- Clean and organize materials and studio space after each session.
- Prepare student artwork for exhibitions as required.
Teaching Excellence:
- Engage students through a mix of discussions, projects, exhibits, visual aids, and critiques, encouraging constructive feedback.
- Maintain a safe and healthy educational environment by setting clear behavior expectations and adhering to all organizational policies.
- Design adaptable lessons that accommodate various artistic abilities, learning styles, and individual needs.
- Foster positive relationships with site coordinators and assistants, addressing student challenges and achievements collaboratively.
- Handle classroom concerns through appropriate channels while ensuring student confidentiality.
Team Collaboration:
- Participate in meetings, training sessions, and key program events as directed by the supervisor.
- Respond promptly to communications from administrative staff and students.
- Build positive relationships with Art Center staff and partner site personnel.
- Support the promotion and retention of Art Center programs and activities.
- Engage in classroom observations and annual performance reviews.
Qualifications:
- Proven ability to teach various artistic mediums and techniques across multiple disciplines, with preference given to those experienced in diverse 2D and 3D art practices.
- Basic computer skills and familiarity with digital platforms.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to inspire and engage students with empathy and understanding.
- Flexibility and resourcefulness in instructional methods.
- CPR certification or willingness to obtain certification is required.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in visual arts, art education, art therapy, or a related field. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may also be considered.
- Experience working with diverse and underserved populations.
- Experience mentoring or teaching youth and teens with varying social-emotional competencies.
- Preferred background in trauma-informed care and strengths-based learning approaches.
- Professional experience in the arts; a personal art portfolio may be requested.
Physical Requirements:
- Instructors must be able to travel to various locations for classes.
- Flexibility in scheduling is required, primarily during after-school hours.
- Ability to lift objects weighing up to 25 lbs as needed.
- Perform physical tasks related to the art mediums being taught.
- Successful completion of a criminal background check is mandatory prior to employment.
