Artificial Intelligence Research Scientist

Idaho National Laboratory is seeking a Data Science Engineer to contribute to our Model Base Design Department. Our team operates on a 9x80 schedule, allowing for every other Friday off. This position may offer hybrid work opportunities. You will report directly to the Department Manager. Your role will involve applying mathematical principles, statistical methods, logic, and computer science to derive insights from extensive datasets related to engineering design.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct data analysis and produce results to meet analytics, visualization, and modeling requirements across various computational environments (cloud, on-premises, edge-based).
- Utilize advanced technologies, including Explainable AI/Machine Learning (AI/ML), Large Language Models (LLMs), and physics-informed machine learning, to tackle scientific challenges and extract valuable insights from data.
- Collaborate with a diverse group of scientists and engineers on complex projects.
- Exhibit strong research capabilities and work effectively with government agencies, academic institutions, and private sector partners to fulfill project objectives.
- Publish research findings in reputable journals and present at conferences.
- Engage with other research teams to develop integrated technical programs for a wide range of clients.
- Maintain detailed notebooks, software, and applications.
- Collaborate with software and database developers to create, test, and implement software solutions across various environments.
- Assess data quality, identify issues, and design repeatable data processing protocols to ensure accurate analysis.
- Work with domain experts to clarify the scope of questions that can be addressed with datasets, identify key data features, and develop metrics that effectively describe system characteristics.
- Employ specialized methodologies and cutting-edge data analysis tools to support the laboratory's mission in ensuring the safe and sustainable use of engineered systems across multiple domains.
- Adhere to laboratory policies and procedures regarding software development, cybersecurity, and the management of sensitive information.
- Collaborate with data providers and software developers to swiftly diagnose and resolve data and software system issues.
- Perform additional tasks as assigned.
Qualifications:
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in data science, engineering, mathematics, computer science, physics, artificial intelligence, or a related technical field.
- Experience requirements vary based on educational background, with options for Bachelor's, Master's, or Ph.D. degrees.
- Proficiency in data science, data analysis, and software development using programming languages such as Python, C#, Java, or C++.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with cloud services and analytics platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud).
- Familiarity with tools such as SciPy, PyTorch, TensorFlow, and Natural Language Processing techniques.
- Understanding of version control systems (e.g., Git).
