Idaho National Laboratory is seeking a skilled Postdoctoral Researcher specializing in Chemical, Mechanical, or Materials Engineering. The ideal candidate will possess strong modeling and analytical capabilities, particularly in the areas of fluid dynamics and thermal transfer, with an emphasis on multiphase flow and chemical interactions. This position will report to the project lead and involves a variety of applications, including waste management, nuclear and chemical reactor systems, advanced manufacturing techniques, and sustainable energy solutions. The work schedule is structured as a 9x80, allowing for every other Friday off.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop computational models that integrate interdisciplinary knowledge in fluid dynamics, thermal transfer, chemistry, combustion, materials science, and nuclear engineering.
  • Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding and experience in simulating complex physical phenomena.
  • Successful candidates will be proactive individuals who collaborate with teams of specialists to enhance our understanding of physicochemical processes in real-world systems and translate this knowledge into practical solutions.

Qualifications Minimum Requirements:
  • Ph.D. in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Ph.D. must be completed prior to the start of the appointment and within the last five years.
  • Proficiency in English with exceptional oral and written communication skills.
  • This role requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance, necessitating U.S. Citizenship.
  • This is an on-site position.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience with computational fluid dynamics tools (e.g., STAR-CCM+, Nek5000/NekRS).
  • Knowledge of computational chemistry or thermodynamics (e.g., Cantera, CHEMKIN, FactSage, ThermoCalc).
  • Experience in thermomechanical analysis using finite element modeling, preferably with Multiphysics Object-Oriented Simulation Environment software.
  • Familiarity with meshing software (e.g., Cubit or equivalent) and VVUQ best practices.
  • Proficiency in scientific data visualization tools (e.g., ParaView or similar).
  • Understanding of machine learning and artificial intelligence algorithms.
  • Experience with high-performance computing, scripting, and batch processing.
  • Proficiency in LINUX and Python programming.
  • A proven track record of accomplishments through reports, publications, intellectual property, or presentations.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • The target salary for this position is $96,900. Compensation decisions at Idaho National Laboratory are based on factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
