Job Overview

Idaho National Laboratory is seeking a Data Science Engineer to contribute to our Model Base Design Department. Our team operates on a 9x80 schedule, allowing for every other Friday off. This position may offer hybrid work opportunities. You will report directly to the Department Manager.

Your role will involve leveraging mathematics, statistics, logic, and computer science to derive insights from extensive datasets related to engineering design. You will be responsible for crafting algorithms and software-based analytical tools to implement these algorithms, utilizing artificial intelligence, machine learning, and other advanced techniques.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct data analysis and generate results to meet data analytics, visualization, and modeling requirements across various computational architectures (cloud, on-premises, edge-based).
  • Utilize cutting-edge technologies, including Explainable AI/Machine Learning (AI/ML), Large Language Models (LLMs), and physics-informed machine learning methodologies.
  • Collaborate with a diverse group of scientists and engineers on complex projects.
  • Exhibit strong research capabilities and the ability to work with government agencies, academic institutions, and private sector partners to achieve project objectives.
  • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings.
  • Engage with other research teams to develop interdisciplinary technical programs for a variety of stakeholders.
  • Maintain detailed notebooks, software, and applications.
  • Collaborate with software and database developers to create, test, and deploy software code across development, staging, and production environments.
  • Analyze data quality, identify issues, and design repeatable data processing procedures to ensure accurate data analysis.
  • Work with domain experts to define the scope of inquiries that can be addressed by datasets, identify key data features for analysis, and design metrics that effectively describe system attributes and behaviors.
  • Employ specialized methods and state-of-the-art data analysis and modeling tools to support INL's mission of ensuring the safe and sustainable use of engineered systems.
  • Adhere to INL policies and lab-wide procedures regarding software development, cybersecurity, and the management of sensitive data.
  • Collaborate with data providers, database administrators, and software developers to quickly diagnose data and software system issues.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned.

Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in data science, engineering, mathematics, computer science, physics, autonomy, artificial intelligence, or a related technical field.
  • Experience requirements vary based on educational background.
  • Proficiency in data science, data analysis, and software development using programming languages such as Python, C#, Java, or C++.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with cloud services and analytics (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform).
  • Familiarity with tools such as SciPy, Notebook IDE, PyTorch, TensorFlow, and Natural Language Processing techniques.
  • Understanding of graph databases, relational databases, and data storage/processing.
  • Experience with version control and repository management (e.g., Git).
