Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Conducting engineering evaluations, life safety assessments, code analysis, calculations, and the design of fire protection systems.
  • Developing fire protection systems for commercial, institutional, industrial, and mission-critical facilities.
  • Producing 3-D designs of sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems, and means of egress analysis, collaborating with architects and engineers on building design.
  • Performing code analysis to ensure compliance with fire protection and life safety requirements in designs.
  • Coordinating with other engineering disciplines within KCI to meet project constraints.
  • Mentoring and guiding junior fire protection staff in design practices.
  • Participating in client meetings to discuss fire protection design strategies.

Required Skills

  • Familiarity with International Code Council (ICC) codes and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with egress modeling and sprinkler layout software.
  • General knowledge of AutoCAD and Revit.
  • Specific experience in sprinkler and fire alarm design.
  • Knowledge of sprinkler hydraulic calculation software.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited institution.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering; advanced studies are preferred.
  • A minimum of 5 to 9 years of professional experience.
  • Pre-employment drug screening is a condition of employment. Background and motor vehicle checks may be required based on the position.

Performance Expectations

  • Submit and deliver timely annual Employee Performance Appraisals for assigned staff.
  • Train adequate backup personnel to support your role in your absence.
  • Comply with all KCI policies and procedures.
  • Ensure projects meet ISO compliance requirements.
  • Manage the work routine of all assigned staff and delegate job activities as necessary.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.
  • Achieve or exceed budgeted individual utilization targets (typically 75%-80%).
  • Attend regular meetings with project teams on all projects/tasks.
  • Provide task performance results and complete all tasks on time and within budget while fully meeting the scope.
  • Consult and coordinate with other practices and sub-consultants as required.
  • Operate within specified budget parameters.
  • Prepare interpractice agreements and/or outside requests as necessary.
  • Provide technical project and staff oversight.
  • Serve as task manager on select projects.
  • Conduct site visits and gather necessary data, including measurements, sketches, notes, and photographs.
  • Prepare design calculations, drawings, specifications, and cost estimates for review and approval.
  • Prepare preliminary concept designs and submit for approval.
  • Read and interpret technical documents required for job performance.
  • Review and approve shop drawings.
  • Complete the Annual Individual Training Program.
