Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Conducting engineering evaluations, life safety assessments, code compliance analysis, and the design of fire protection systems.
- Developing fire protection systems for various facilities, including commercial, institutional, industrial, and mission-critical environments.
- Producing 3-D designs for sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems, and egress analysis, collaborating with architects and engineers on building designs.
- Performing code analysis to ensure the incorporation of essential fire protection and life safety features into designs.
- Coordinating with other engineering disciplines within KCI to meet project requirements.
- Mentoring and guiding junior fire protection staff in design practices.
- Participating in client meetings to discuss fire protection design strategies.
Required Skills
- Familiarity with International Code Council (ICC) codes and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards.
- Strong written and verbal communication abilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with egress modeling and sprinkler layout software.
- General knowledge of AutoCAD and Revit.
- Specific experience in sprinkler and fire alarm design.
- Familiarity with sprinkler hydraulic calculation software.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited institution.
Additional Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering; advanced degrees are preferred.
- A minimum of 5 to 9 years of professional experience.
- Pre-employment drug screening may be required. Background and motor vehicle checks may also be conducted based on the position.
Performance Expectations
- Submit and deliver timely annual Employee Performance Appraisals for assigned personnel.
- Train backup personnel to ensure continuity in your absence.
- Adhere to all KCI policies and procedures.
- Ensure projects meet ISO compliance standards.
- Manage the workflow of assigned staff and delegate tasks as necessary.
- Complete additional duties as assigned.
- Achieve or exceed individual utilization targets (typically 75%-80%).
- Attend regular project team meetings to discuss ongoing projects.
- Track and report task performance results.
- Complete all assignments on time and within budget while fully meeting project scope.
- Collaborate with other practices and sub-consultants as needed.
- Operate within specified budget parameters.
- Prepare interpractice agreements and outside requests as necessary.
- Provide technical oversight for projects and staff.
- Serve as task manager on selected projects.
- Compare field data to base plans.
- Conduct site visits to gather necessary data, including measurements and notes.
- Prepare design calculations, drawings, specifications, and cost estimates for review.
- Develop preliminary concept designs for approval.
- Interpret technical documents required for job performance.
- Review and approve shop drawings.
- Complete the Annual Individual Training Program.
