Job Description:

**Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO)**, the Senior Accounting Manager is a critical role in ensuring the financial health and stability of Vesta, PBC, a pioneering climate change mitigation company. This position is responsible for managing the accounting department, maintaining Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) compliance, generating financial reports, and handling monthly, quarterly, and year-end closing and reconciliation responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities:
  • **Financial Statement Preparation**: Process monthly, quarterly, and year-end closings, and summarize the current financial status by preparing balance sheets, profit and loss statements, cash flow statements, and other reports.
  • **GAAP Compliance**: Ensure GAAP compliance through account controls and reconciliations on a periodic basis.
  • **Accounting Policies**: Establish and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
  • **Audit Preparation**: Prepare for and manage audits, including financial statement audits and tax audits.
  • **Payroll Management**: Process payroll and related journal entries.
  • **Reporting**: Support reporting for investors, government agencies, and philanthropic grant providers.
  • **Supervision**: Supervise billing, receivables, payables, cash receipts, cash disbursements, and general ledger functions.
  • **Documentation**: Document and maintain financial processes and controls by preparing and recommending policies and procedures.
  • **Tax Filings**: Work with service providers to prepare annual tax filings.
  • **Budgeting and Forecasting**: Assist with annual budgeting, monthly variance reporting, and aspects of forecasting, as needed.
  • **Staff Management**: Hire and manage accounting clerical staff.
Requirements and Preferred Skills:
  • Bachelor's degree with an emphasis in accounting.
  • Five+ years of experience in financial statement preparation, budgeting, payroll, purchasing, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and inventory management.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or equivalent.
  • Experience in both public and private corporate accounting environments.
  • Experience with government and/or philanthropic grant accounting and reporting.
  • Experience implementing technology solutions to enhance systems and processes.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Comfortable assessing current accounting operations, offering recommendations for improvement, and implementing new processes.
  • Ability to develop and establish accounting policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work independently, with little supervision.
  • Ability to effectively direct and supervise accounting department staff.
  • Ability to analyze financial data and to prepare accurate reports in a timely fashion.
  • Deep experience with standard accounting software, including QuickBooks.
  • Very strong Excel and spreadsheet skills.
