Job Title: Substance Abuse Counselor

At Middlesex Human Service Agency, we are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Substance Abuse Counselor to join our team. As a key member of our staff, you will play a vital role in providing evidence-based substance abuse counseling and 12-step models to our clients.

About the Role:

This is a full-time position, working Tuesday-Saturday, 10:30 am - 6:30 pm. You will be responsible for conducting diagnostic assessment interviews and individual counseling sessions, developing a comprehensive understanding of program policies and philosophy of treatment, and facilitating individual and group counseling sessions.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct diagnostic assessment interviews and individual counseling sessions to develop treatment plans.
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of program policies and philosophy of treatment to ensure alignment with client needs.
  • Facilitate individual and group counseling sessions to promote client growth and recovery.
  • Participate in group supervision, staff meetings, case conferences, and training sessions to stay up-to-date on best practices.
  • Write clinical assessments, group notes, treatment summaries, and court correspondence to maintain accurate records.
  • Conduct educational/motivational classes as assigned to promote client engagement.
  • Engage in discharge planning, aftercare referral, and follow-up with clients to ensure successful transition.
  • Provide crisis intervention counseling when needed to support clients in crisis.
  • Provide HIV/AIDS/STD education, information, and referral services to promote client health and well-being.
  • Serve as Tobacco Education Coordinator when assigned to promote client health and well-being.
  • Maintain comprehensive client records to ensure accurate tracking of client progress.
  • Monitor client compliance with program rules and provide supervision of client activities to ensure safety and well-being.
  • Facilitate or supervise urine drug screening and medication administration according to policies and BSAS protocols to ensure client safety.
  • Maintain client confidentiality in compliance with applicable laws to ensure client trust and respect.
  • Engage in training to expand knowledge of substance abuse and related disciplines to improve clinical skills.
  • Provide staff coverage for non-clinical functions when needed to ensure seamless operations.
  • Abide by MHSA policies regarding boundaries, confidentiality, and ethical standards to ensure a safe and respectful work environment.
  • Fulfill various other responsibilities as assigned by the Program Director to ensure program success.
Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or GED required; Bachelor's or Associate's Degree preferred.
  • Must be enrolled in the LADC or CADAC program and acquire a license within three years of employment.
  • Knowledge of substance abuse, its treatment, and 12-step models to provide effective counseling services.
  • Familiarity with Massachusetts DPH/BSAS regulations to ensure compliance.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively engage with clients and colleagues.
  • Experience with spreadsheets, databases, and word processing software to maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to work with a diverse population to provide culturally sensitive services.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team to ensure seamless operations.
  • CPR, AED, and First Aid Certification required (MHSA will provide training opportunities).
  • Reliable attendance and punctuality to ensure timely service delivery.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable personal transportation required to ensure timely service delivery.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred to provide services to a diverse population.
