Compensation and Benefits Overview

Anticipated Salary Range: $7,500 to $9,167 per month

The salary is competitive and negotiable based on qualifications. This role is part of the CSU Management Personnel Plan (MPP).

All positions at California State University require onsite work. Certain roles may qualify for remote work one day per week, subject to university policies.

The CSU system offers a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision insurance, participation in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), paid sick and vacation time, and 15 paid holidays annually. Eligible employees can also take part in the fee waiver education program.

Job Overview

Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Faculty Affairs, the Academic Employee Relations Manager operates independently, applying sound judgment to address complex employee relations issues, cases, and programmatic initiatives. The successful candidate will possess extensive knowledge of employment laws, collective bargaining agreements, relevant legislation, policies, and workplace investigations.

The Academic Employee Relations Manager is integral to the Faculty Affairs leadership team, fostering a professional, compassionate, and human-centered approach in all interactions with the university community.

Essential Qualifications

  • In-depth understanding of state and federal employment laws and regulations.
  • Advanced expertise in collective bargaining contract management.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, including active listening, to effectively engage with campus and external stakeholders.
  • Strong time management abilities to handle multiple projects in a dynamic environment with competing priorities.
  • Proficient critical thinking, analytical, research, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Effective negotiation skills to resolve issues and promote team harmony.
  • Capability to mediate disputes and complaints effectively.
  • Ability to produce investigatory reports, business correspondence, procedural manuals, position statements, and grievance responses.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining productive working relationships while leading and motivating staff.
  • Capacity to understand and analyze employment concerns with objectivity and confidentiality.
  • Empathy and understanding of diverse perspectives from various backgrounds and cultures.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources or a related field.
  • A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in human resources or related academic personnel roles.
  • Experience in a collective bargaining environment is essential.
  • Proven track record in effective conflict resolution.
