Position Overview
The R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) is currently seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant specializing in the care of Orthopaedic Trauma patients. This role is integral to a dedicated trauma team, providing comprehensive care from patient admission to discharge.
This position involves working four 10-hour shifts with a rotating schedule.

The NP/PA will conduct thorough examinations, evaluations, and assessments, interpreting clinical data to deliver optimal care for patients with orthopaedic injuries. This role requires collaboration with a multidisciplinary team. Our Orthopaedics Department serves as a key referral center for patients across Maryland and beyond. Responsibilities will include both inpatient care and outpatient clinic duties on designated days.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct patient interviews to gather health histories and perform comprehensive physical examinations.
- Order and assess necessary diagnostic and laboratory tests.
- Document health histories, progress notes, and treatment plans accurately.
- Facilitate communication between patients and physicians to ensure coordinated care, including pre- and post-operative management.
- Provide care to patients in both clinical and hospital environments.
- Engage in multidisciplinary meetings focused on quality improvement and service enhancement.
Essential Requirements:
- Education/Training – Must have graduated from an accredited Physician Assistant program recognized by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA). A Bachelor's degree is required, or a Master of Science degree with completion of a Nurse Practitioner Program.
- Experience – While prior experience is preferred, it is not mandatory. New graduates are welcome to apply.
- License/Certification – Certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) is required. A current license with the Maryland Board of Physicians is necessary, or registration with the Maryland Board of Nursing as a Nurse Practitioner in the relevant specialty.
- Must possess a CRNP - Acute Care or PA-C license.
