Position Overview

The Day Care Council of New York Inc. is seeking a Director of External Affairs to spearhead our outreach and advocacy initiatives. This role is crucial in enhancing our organizational visibility, influencing public policy, and securing essential resources to further our mission in the child care sector.

The Day Care Council of New York Inc. is part of a collaborative consortium comprising four independent nonprofit organizations dedicated to providing comprehensive services to children, families, and child care providers throughout New York City. Each organization contributes unique expertise and focuses on various communities, including Latino, Haitian, and Asian populations, while engaging in public policy advocacy and understanding the complexities of the child care and early education systems.

Role Responsibilities

As the Director of External Affairs, your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Acting as the spokesperson for the organization, engaging with partners, funders, and government entities.
  • Meeting with legislators to elevate the Consortium's leadership role in early care and education matters.
  • Collaborating with policy teams to educate stakeholders and prepare impactful communications such as op-eds and policy briefs.
  • Working with marketing and policy teams to create and distribute public materials, including annual reports and press releases.
  • Utilizing research and evaluations from the Consortium's programs to secure additional funding for expanded services.
  • Partnering with development staff to identify and pursue funding opportunities and grants.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A minimum of five years of experience in early childhood education, human services, or the nonprofit sector.
  • Familiarity with New York City and State government, particularly in education and human services.
  • A comprehensive understanding of the early childhood education landscape, including key challenges and opportunities.
  • Strong project management experience and the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a proven track record of collaboration with diverse stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in digital communication tools and social media for advocacy purposes.
  • A high level of integrity, professionalism, and accountability.
  • Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant field; bilingual candidates are preferred.

Employment Details

This is a permanent full-time position with a commitment of 35 hours per week. The salary for this role is set at $110,000, and the successful candidate will be eligible for a comprehensive benefits package.
