Director of External Affairs, Day Care Council of New York Inc.
The Day Care Council of New York Inc. (DCCNY) is a pioneering consortium dedicated to enhancing child care and family services across New York City. Our mission is to educate decision-makers, provide training and support to child care providers, and empower families to access high-quality child care services. We are seeking a Director of External Affairs to lead our advocacy initiatives, strengthen strategic partnerships, and elevate the visibility of our organization.
About the Consortium
The DCCNY is composed of four independent nonprofit organizations that collectively offer a wide range of services to children, families, and child care providers throughout New York City. Each member organization specializes in various communities, including Latino, Haitian, and Asian populations, and is engaged in public policy advocacy, employer outreach, and a comprehensive understanding of the local child care and early education systems.
With over 26 years of dedicated service, we are at a pivotal moment where we aim to broaden our impact. The Director of External Affairs will be instrumental in this expansion, requiring a candidate who is deeply committed to early childhood education and child care, as well as possessing strategic, resourceful, and agile leadership skills. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in leadership roles, experience in managing confidential information, and the ability to create reports, presentations, and dashboards for both internal and external stakeholders.
Role Overview
As the Director of External Affairs, you will be at the forefront of our external relations and advocacy strategies. Your primary responsibilities will include enhancing the organization’s public profile, influencing policy decisions, and securing necessary resources to further our mission.
This position, while based at the Day Care Council of New York, will involve collaboration with the executive directors of the Consortium and their teams. You will serve as the spokesperson for the Consortium, aiming to amplify our presence in the community.
The successful candidate will excel in building consensus among diverse stakeholders, effectively managing relationships with senior leaders to achieve collective goals. Strong skills in persuasion, strategic communication, and the ability to navigate complex interpersonal dynamics with diplomacy are essential. Your problem-solving abilities, emotional intelligence, and resilience will foster a collaborative environment where mutual respect thrives. Building trust through transparency and consistent follow-through on commitments will be key to aligning various perspectives toward shared organizational objectives.
Key Responsibilities
Your immediate responsibilities will include:
- Acting as the spokesperson for the Consortium, engaging with partners, funders, and government representatives.
- Meeting with legislators to advocate for the Consortium and establish a leadership role in early care and education matters.
- Collaborating with policy teams to educate stakeholders and prepare policy briefs, op-eds, and case statements.
- Working with marketing and policy teams to create and distribute public materials, including policy statements, annual reports, and press releases.
- Utilizing research and evaluations from program services to secure additional funding for expanded initiatives.
- Partnering with development staff to identify and pursue funding opportunities and grants.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess:
- A minimum of five years of experience in early childhood education, human services, nonprofit management, or the philanthropic sector.
- Familiarity with New York City and State government, particularly in education and human services.
- A comprehensive understanding of the early childhood education landscape, including current challenges and opportunities.
- At least five years of project management experience.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills and a history of successful collaboration with diverse stakeholders.
- The ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines.
- Proficiency in digital communication tools and social media for advocacy purposes.
- A high standard of integrity, professionalism, and accountability.
- Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving capabilities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to craft messages for varied audiences.
- A bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
- Bilingual skills are preferred.
Employment Details
This is a permanent full-time, exempt position requiring 35 hours of work per week. The salary for this role is $110,000, and the position is eligible for the benefits package provided to full-time staff.
While DCCNY currently offers a hybrid work arrangement, this role may necessitate in-office presence and regular public engagements. The position will be based in midtown Manhattan, with responsibilities extending to all four organizations and fieldwork.
Application Process
Interested candidates should submit a cover letter and resume, clearly indicating the position title in the subject line. We are committed to equitable hiring practices and encourage applicants from diverse backgrounds to apply.
The Day Care Council of New York is an equal opportunity employer, dedicated to fostering an inclusive workplace and promoting diversity within our team.
