Community Communication Coordinator

The Community Communication Coordinator plays a vital role in overseeing social media channels for signs of potential disturbances, monitoring emergency communication systems for emerging situations, and relaying critical information in real-time to the Lead and the Program Manager.

Key responsibilities include crafting and disseminating public awareness materials, public service announcements, and press releases through traditional media outlets (print, television, radio) as well as approved social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, and LinkedIn. Engaging with local community organizations both in-person and online to share and collect grassroots information is also a significant aspect of this role.

This position requires a collaborative approach, as the Community Communication Coordinator may step in for outreach specialists when additional support is necessary.

RESPONSIBILITIES/ACTIVITIES:
  • Analyze social media and other online platforms to provide insights on current and potential violent behavior to the violence prevention team lead (VPTL)
  • Develop and maintain community violence heat maps
  • Execute incident response team dispatch duties
  • Coordinate responses to community news by creating and distributing official notifications through press releases, social media updates, websites, podcasts, etc.
  • Deliver communication standards training to newly hired staff
  • Organize logistics for community meetings, including budgeting, venue selection, catering, and setup/breakdown activities
  • Create and distribute agendas for various community meetings
  • Invite guest speakers for community meetings
  • Attend meetings as required
  • Document detailed status reports
  • Engage in mandatory training and pursue professional development as necessary
  • Be prepared for additional responsibilities and program engagement activities as needed
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
  • High School Diploma/GED required
  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism or a related field preferred
  • A minimum of three years of experience in writing technical or functional training materials
  • Experience with video recording, editing, and publishing
  • Ability to collaborate with individuals from diverse backgrounds
  • Experience in training and onboarding
  • Comfortable interacting with community-based services and organizations
  • Proven knowledge or training in crisis intervention
  • Strong critical thinking skills
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to work with high-risk individuals
  • Understanding of community dynamics and current street conflicts
  • Preferred experience or training in crisis intervention
  • Commitment to nonviolence and restorative justice principles
  • Experience working effectively in a team environment
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods
  • Effective communication skills, including talking, listening, and using hands and fingers, with occasional bending, stretching, stooping, kneeling, and crouching
  • Close visual acuity for analyzing data and utilizing computer monitors
  • Occasional lifting and/or moving of items up to 50 pounds
