Job Summary

Gaston College seeks a highly skilled and experienced Student Conduct Officer to join our team. As a key member of the Student Affairs department, this role will be responsible for addressing, investigating, and adjudicating student conduct matters across all college campuses.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage and implement the Gaston College Student Code of Conduct for students in both curriculum and economic and workforce development programs.
  • Ensure that all Student Code of Conduct disciplinary procedures are followed.
  • Schedule and coordinate meetings, interviews, appointments, and/or other similar activities with students; ensure students are aware of rights and responsibilities.
  • Provide support and advocacy for students while emphasizing individual accountability and responsibility.
  • Engage students in developmentally appropriate conversations and collaborate as needed with faculty, staff, Campus Police, and Human Resources to address and resolve student conduct matters.
  • Develop and implement preventative efforts and educational sanctions designed to enhance student learning related to expected standards of behavior.
  • Lead and oversee prompt, fair, and impartial investigations, adjudications, and sanctions of student conduct cases referred to Student Affairs.
  • Oversee the administration of the student conduct software system (Maxient) and provide campus-wide leadership in the application of the software.
  • Maintain disciplinary record-keeping process in compliance with College and state policy on student records retention.
  • Develop and implement training programs and workshops to educate the College community about the Student Code of Conduct, disciplinary procedures, classroom management skills, and other matters related to student conduct, Title IX, VAWA, and the Clery Act.
  • Create and revise publications and other written material pertaining to College disciplinary policies and procedures.
  • Serve as a core team member of the College's CARE (Conduct Awareness Response Encouragement) Team.
  • Investigate sexual and other unlawful harassment or misconduct cases involving students and assist the College's Title IX Coordinator/Deputy Coordinator with the timely resolution of these investigations.
  • Actively participate in conferences, workshops, etc., to stay abreast of federal and state regulations and current movements in the field of student conduct and Title IX investigations.
  • Continuously identify and integrate best practices into knowledge base and practice.
  • Maintain a high standard of professionalism in representing the College, including confidentiality in all aspects of the position's responsibilities and adherence to policies, procedures, and other established guidelines.
  • Adhere to professional accountability and accept responsibility for managing situations and challenges.
  • Work cooperatively with team members and colleagues, contributing positively and constructively to the achievement of team and College objectives, and provide a high level of customer service by establishing and maintaining effective working relationships and partnerships.
  • Provide related data, reports, and information to internal departments and others when requested.
  • Assist with departmental activities and events as conduct caseload permits.
  • Participate in other College activities, such as Open House, Registration, and Graduation events, as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree from a nationally accredited institution in counseling, student personnel, education, behavioral sciences, or a related field required.
  • Two years of experience working with student conduct in the higher education field.
  • Experience with Maxient, Watermark, and Colleague preferred.
  • Knowledge of applicable state and federal regulations and current trends and legal matters related to student conduct, Clery, Title IX, VAWA, and DFSCA preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal, presentation, and facilitation skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to problem solve in a collaborative manner and to make difficult and timely decisions utilizing sound judgment required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Physical Requirements

Generally works in a traditional climate-controlled office environment and requires the ability to sit for extended periods.

Some walking, standing, and bending required, and the ability to lift and maneuver items weighing up to 25 pounds required.

Work environment can be stressful at times in dealing with a wide variety of challenges and deadlines.

In addition to regular office hours, position sometimes requires overtime and/or evening hours.
