Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Regional Safety Director, Location Safety Manager, and Maintenance Manager to ensure that safety measures are designed and implemented in line with budgetary constraints and organizational guidelines.
  • Identify locations that are not meeting performance targets, conduct thorough analyses, and work with local teams to propose and execute continuous improvement strategies.
  • Conduct detailed investigations of significant incidents, assisting in the development of corrective actions and ensuring that lessons learned are effectively communicated and integrated.
  • Share innovative solutions and best practices for problem-solving across managed locations.
  • Support the Regional Safety Director and Risk Management in claims handling and litigation processes, performing Root Cause Analysis as necessary.
  • Collaborate closely with the workers' compensation third-party administrator to manage claims proactively.
  • Ensure adequate staffing levels for driving trainers, working in partnership with operations and HR to assess training needs and manage driver onboarding effectively.
  • Assist locations in determining and executing appropriate remedial actions following safety incidents, and review disciplinary measures with HR and Operations.
  • Oversee multiple locations to ensure compliance with organizational policies and standard operating procedures, while providing visibility of compliance scores to regional and senior management.
  • Prepare monthly reports and analyze safety performance for locations, identifying trends and corrective actions to communicate to management.
  • Evaluate location safety performance using various tools, including Daily Dispatch and Driver Mobile Manager.
  • In conjunction with the Location Manager, participate in the recruitment and onboarding process for new Location Safety Managers.
  • Deliver safety training for new Location Managers and Safety Managers, fostering the development of competencies and skills, and supporting regional training workshops.
  • Utilize various databases and tools to ensure operational efficiencies at the location level.
  • Conduct annual Safety Wellness Checks at locations, with increased frequency at high-risk sites.
  • Assist HR and Location Managers with driver recruitment, retention, and training initiatives.
  • Enhance the site safety review process through safety audits, collaborating with locations and management to ensure proper closure of safety review actions.
  • Manage the BeSafe initiative, including the delivery of Safety Leadership courses and onboarding of BeSafe Coaches.
  • Work with Regional Vice Presidents, Assistant General Managers, and Location Managers to communicate and implement divisional activities and initiatives.
  • Provide technical guidance to Location Safety Managers as needed, prioritizing requests from Location Managers in partnership with the Area Safety Manager.
  • Verify compliance with various safety standards and conduct quality assurance audits of training programs at the location level, ensuring adherence to company guidelines.
  • Support the execution of kickoff and safety meetings by collaborating with location staff.
  • Provide necessary startup support as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Certifications Required

  • Preferred: 2 years of college education or equivalent experience.
  • Certifications: OSHA 10-hour, safety/transportation certifications, etc.

Minimum Experience and Skills Required

  • 7 years of experience in safety and transportation.
  • 5 years of experience in fleet transportation management.
  • Strong commitment to safety practices.
  • Demonstrated leadership, decision-making, and team-building abilities.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook; familiarity with timekeeping and payroll systems is a plus.
  • Advanced skills in operational management technology, including Smart technology and applications.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Adept at data interpretation and root cause analysis.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  • Proven ability to train, coach, and lead others.
  • Training in collision investigation.
  • State/Provincial Instructor Certification in at least one relevant jurisdiction.
  • Certified Defensive Driving Instructor through the Smith System.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Must be able to navigate the office environment and utilize standard office equipment.
  • Travel is required for at least 80% of the time.
