DEPARTMENT: Health and Human Services (HHS)

REPORTS TO: Transportation Coordinator

FLSA STATUS: Nonexempt, fulltime

WAGE RANGE: $24.13 per hour

Position Summary:

The Driver is responsible for providing safe and timely transportation services for Cowlitz tribal members to their medical appointments. This role requires adherence to confidentiality standards and the principles of HIPAA, while embodying the mission and values of the Cowlitz Indian Tribe and the HHS department.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist passengers during boarding and disembarking from the vehicle.
  • Manage vehicle comfort settings, including heating and ventilation.
  • Drive along designated routes, ensuring punctual arrival for appointments.
  • Prioritize passenger safety by complying with all relevant traffic laws and regulations.
  • Operate vehicles and related equipment, including communication and navigation tools, ensuring safety protocols are followed.
  • Deliver medications to patients unable to visit the clinic.
  • Maintain accurate trip logs on a daily basis.
  • Conduct pre-departure vehicle inspections, checking fuel, oil, and water levels.
  • Perform basic maintenance tasks, including cleaning and sanitizing the vehicle.
  • Respond effectively to emergencies, including accidents and medical situations.
  • Provide excellent customer service to all clients and stakeholders.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development through training and workshops.
  • Support the training of new drivers as needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the role.
  • Follow safety procedures and use appropriate safety gear.
  • Contribute to team efforts and achieve related objectives.
  • Complete additional duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Understanding of traffic safety laws and regulations.
  • Familiarity with the Cowlitz Indian Reservation and its roadways.
  • Knowledge of transportation policies and procedures of the Cowlitz Indian Tribe.
  • Proficient in the safe operation of motor vehicles.
  • Ability to operate transit vehicles under various weather conditions.
  • Competence in using computers and communication devices.
  • Ability to interpret safety documents and manuals.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions accurately.
  • Capacity to remain composed in challenging situations.
  • Ability to meet strict deadlines.
  • Strong decision-making skills and independent judgment.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with diverse individuals.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Five years of driving experience required.
  • Must obtain Defensive Driving, PASS, and Child Safety Securement certifications within three months of hire.
  • Must obtain First Aid, CPR, and BLS/AED certifications within three months of hire.
  • Valid Class C driver's license with Passenger Vehicle Endorsement required.
  • Must pass a background screening as per established requirements.

Physical Demands:

This position requires frequent sitting for extended periods, using hands and fingers, and reaching with arms. Occasional walking, standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, and climbing may be necessary. The role demands normal visual acuity and the ability to communicate effectively. Lifting and carrying objects up to 50 pounds may be required.

Work Environment:

Work is conducted in both indoor and outdoor settings, including vehicle operation. Exposure to various environmental factors such as dust, fumes, and potential hazards may occur. Appropriate protective equipment may be necessary, and the noise level can vary from moderate to high. Evening and weekend work may be required.
