Key Responsibilities

The Policy Associate will be instrumental in advocating for economic liberty within state legislatures. The primary focus will be on advancing legislation that ensures the right to earn a living without undue governmental constraints. Specific attention will be given to the repeal of unnecessary occupational licensing laws, particularly in the beauty and barbering sectors.

  • Conducting thorough research on legislation in collaboration with the Director of Legislation and Legislative Counsel, including:
    • Assessing the necessity for new legislation
    • Identifying supporters and opponents of bills, along with their respective strengths and weaknesses
    • Engaging with key stakeholders
  • Formulating and implementing legislative strategies with the Director of Legislation and Legislative Counsel, which includes:
    • Establishing and nurturing relationships with bill sponsors
    • Mobilizing grassroots advocates
    • Creating coalitions with diverse political organizations
    • Planning and executing media events to garner support for legislation
    • Monitoring legislative bills to ensure alignment with organizational strategies
    • Lobbying and assisting grassroots advocates in discussions with state legislators
    • Coordinating testifiers for committee hearings
    • Drafting written testimonies and presenting at committee hearings
    • Building and managing campaign web pages using government affairs software
Qualifications

Required qualifications include:

  • A Bachelor's degree
  • A minimum of one year of professional experience
  • A strong understanding and passion for the Institute's core principles, especially in occupational licensing reform
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with legislators, policymakers, and the media
  • Capability to analyze legislative bills in partnership with attorneys
  • Outstanding organizational skills to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines
  • Resilience, positivity, and a collaborative spirit
  • Professionalism in both appearance and conduct, with the ability to work across the political spectrum

Preferred qualifications include:

  • A background in political science, lobbying, or political communication
  • Experience in a state legislature or government affairs
  • Familiarity with government affairs software
  • Experience in grassroots campaign management
  • Public speaking and legislative testimony experience
  • Proven ability to build and maintain relationships

  • Availability for weekend work during legislative sessions
  • Representation of the Institute at various conferences
