About the Position: Controls Engineer

JOB OVERVIEW:
This role involves overseeing controls engineering project specifications that encompass control system architecture, DCS/PLC programming, control panel design, instrumentation, testing support, and commissioning assistance.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Must demonstrate strong organizational skills, technical expertise, effective communication abilities, and experience collaborating in a multidisciplinary environment while interfacing with engineers, designers, and drafters.

Design, develop, and implement DCS/PLC control systems (both software and hardware) to fulfill process requirements while adhering to local or governmental design and implementation codes.

Possess knowledge of control panel and system design standards and regulatory practices for local or governmental entities. Generate documentation detailing control configurations and designs.

Such documents include operational theory, detailed descriptions of control system designs, and system implementation/acceptance testing plans.
Capable of collaborating with facility design to optimize panel placement, minimizing voltage drop and enhancing panel maintenance.

System Design Calculations/Analysis:

Conduct short circuit protection, harmonics analysis, noise reduction/cancellation, power consumption assessments, load flow analysis, protective relay/circuit design, ground fault monitoring, and safety system implementation (SIL rating). Knowledgeable in analyzing system designs for hazard analysis development and mitigation. Ability to implement control system redundancy to reduce single points of failure.

Create schematics for control system configurations, wiring, network layouts, and equipment panel layouts using AutoCAD. Assist with the initial start-up and troubleshooting of integrated systems and the creation of system documentation.

The individual will engage in automation and control system integration projects for clients across various sectors, including entertainment and manufacturing.

Will serve as the technical lead on projects, mentoring junior engineers, technicians, and contractors.
Will also function as Project Manager for smaller projects ranging from $50k to $250k.

Responsibilities Include:
Developing and executing implementation plans for projects.
Assigning tasks to meet overall project timelines.
Ensuring all project team members have a clear understanding of the scope of responsibilities.
Creating schedules that align with project and customer requirements.
Monitoring project progress and detailing any changes.

Overseeing all purchasing and subcontractor requirements. Responsible for cost development and proposal of change orders to contract scope.


QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering.

(Directly related experience may substitute for degree) A minimum of 5 years of experience in the following areas is preferred: Ethernet-based control systems, safety systems, instrumentation, components, logic programming, and DCS programming (e.g., DeltaV, Experion, 800xA). Experience with instrumentation and controls/PLC system design (e.g., Allen Bradley, Modicon, Siemens) is required.

Familiarity with AutoCAD is also desirable.
Key Competencies: Understanding of contract documents and specifications. Ability to gather field data and accurately document findings. Proficient in performing system design functions.

Skills: Planning, Customer Focus, Timely Decision Making, Informing, Organizing, Priority Setting, Problem Solving. All employees must be proficient in Microsoft Windows and Office environments.


TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:
Willingness to travel up to 35%.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Visual acuity, color perception, auditory skills, clear speech, manual dexterity, driving, lifting, climbing, and the ability to mount and dismount equipment, as well as pushing and pulling.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Standard office setting, on-site office environment, and various industrial settings. Frequent use of PCs, fax machines, copiers, and telephones.
