Position Overview: Automation Control Specialist

The Employee Connect is seeking an Automation Control Specialist to join our team. This role is pivotal in overseeing controls engineering project requirements that encompass control system design, DCS/PLC programming, control panel design, instrumentation, and start-up support.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate strong organizational skills and technical expertise while effectively communicating in a multi-disciplinary environment, collaborating with engineers, designers, and drafters.
  • Design, develop, and implement DCS/PLC control systems (both software and hardware) to fulfill process requirements while adhering to local and governmental design codes.
  • Possess knowledge of control panel and system design standards, ensuring compliance with relevant codes.
  • Create comprehensive documentation detailing control configurations and designs, including operational theories, detailed system descriptions, and testing plans.
  • Interface with facility designs to optimize panel locations, reducing voltage drop and enhancing maintenance efficiency.
  • Conduct essential system design calculations and analyses, including short circuit protection, harmonics, noise reduction, power consumption, load flow, and safety system implementation.
  • Analyze system designs for hazard assessments and mitigation strategies.
  • Implement control system redundancies to minimize potential points of failure.
  • Develop schematics for control system configurations, wiring, network layouts, and equipment panel layouts using AutoCAD.
  • Assist in the initial start-up and troubleshooting of integrated systems, contributing to the development of system documentation.
  • Engage in automation and control system integration projects across various industries, including entertainment and manufacturing.
  • Serve as the technical lead on projects, guiding junior engineers, technicians, and contractors.
  • Manage smaller projects, with budgets ranging from $50k to $250k, including:
    • Developing and executing project implementation plans.
    • Assigning tasks to meet project deadlines.
    • Ensuring clarity of project scope among team members.
    • Creating schedules that align with project and customer requirements.
    • Monitoring project progress and documenting changes.
    • Overseeing purchasing and subcontractor needs.
    • Estimating costs and proposing changes to contract scopes.
Qualifications:
  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (related experience may substitute for degree).
  • Preferred experience of 8-10 years in Ethernet-based control systems, safety systems, instrumentation, and DCS programming (e.g., DeltaV, Experion, 800xA).
  • Required experience with instrumentation and PLC system design (e.g., Allen Bradley, Modicon, Siemens).
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD is advantageous.
  • Key Competencies: Understanding of contract documents and specifications, ability to collect and accurately record field data, and perform system design functions. Skills in planning, customer focus, timely decision-making, and problem-solving are essential.
  • Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Windows and Office environments is required.
  • Travel: Willingness to travel up to 35%.
Physical Demands:
  • Ability to see, perceive colors, hear, speak clearly, demonstrate dexterity in hands, drive, lift, climb, and perform physical tasks.
Working Conditions:
  • Standard office environment with frequent use of PCs, fax machines, copy machines, and phones. Occasional night shifts may be required for installations during off-hours.
