Job Overview

Shift: 12pm — 8pm

This role operates under the supervision of the Chief Engineer and is focused on the upkeep and repair of building systems. The Facilities Maintenance Engineer is accountable for the management of all HVAC systems and associated apparatus, including pumps, motors, fans, drives, and starters. Responsibilities extend to various building systems such as electrical, plumbing, emergency power, fire safety, and security systems. Additionally, the engineer oversees all modular and standard furniture within the facility, along with door locks and a range of audio-visual equipment. The responsibilities of this position are not limited to the tasks listed below.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the safe and efficient operation, maintenance, and repair of all building systems.
  • Address the corrective needs of building equipment and system components, aiding in the continuous operation and maintenance of utilized equipment.
  • Diagnose system issues and collaborate with the Chief Engineer to implement solutions.
  • Perform necessary actions to maintain the facility's systems, including repairs, upgrades, and maintenance of heating and cooling systems.
  • Utilize trade skills to complete assignments, providing estimates of time and materials required for repairs to the Chief Engineer.
  • Manage systems including HVAC and related equipment, plumbing (repair or replacement of fixtures and drain cleaning), electrical systems, life-safety systems, and emergency power solutions.
  • Install and change locks, maintaining a record of key assignments.
  • Conduct installations and repairs of plumbing and electrical fixtures.
  • Assist in relocating and installing machinery, equipment, and furnishings.
  • Adhere to certified safety protocols to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Conduct operational checks and adjustments on equipment throughout the shift.
  • Complete work tickets, preventive maintenance, and repairs on a daily basis.
  • Oversee contractors as necessary.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

A high school diploma or equivalent GED, Universal CFC certification, and a minimum of five (5) years of experience in operating and maintaining office building systems. Membership in good standing with Engineers Local 99 is preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Skills Required:

  • Possession of a DC Third Class Steam Engineer's license.
  • Experience with building systems, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and life safety systems.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair air conditioning systems.
  • Proficient in diagnosing pneumatic and digital HVAC controls.
  • Capable of estimating time, materials, labor, and equipment for maintenance and repair tasks.
  • Ability to interpret schematics, blueprints, and sketches.
  • Knowledge of safety hazards and precautions related to building maintenance.
  • Experience overseeing construction projects, typically during off-hours.
  • Ability to use a multi-meter for troubleshooting electrical systems.
  • Familiarity with office building plumbing systems and repair techniques.
  • Available for on-call duties and responsive to issues 24/7 on a rotating basis.
  • Willingness to cover shifts when the Chief Engineer is unavailable.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.

Driving & Work Hours:

  • A valid driver's license is required prior to appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
  • Extended work hours, including weekends and holidays, may be necessary.
