Position Overview:

The Outreach and Communications Specialist for the RI Space Grant Consortium (RISGC), supported by NASA, is tasked with crafting and producing captivating content for the consortium's website, newsletter, and social media platforms.

The content generated will enhance visibility and understanding of the program and its offerings throughout the state of Rhode Island.

In collaboration with the RI Space Grant Program Manager, the Specialist will develop impactful materials to effectively communicate the mission, accomplishments, initiatives, and funding opportunities of the program.

This role encompasses current updates on both local and national activities associated with the NASA Space Grant College and Fellowship Project.

The Specialist will also take charge of executing comprehensive outreach strategies aimed at engaging diverse audiences in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) research and curriculum/professional development.

This position is crucial in advancing the mission of the NASA RI Space Grant Consortium, nurturing partnerships, and disseminating information to inspire and educate the community.

The Specialist will collaborate closely with the RI Space Grant team, industry stakeholders, NASA, academic researchers, and the public to enhance outreach efforts and facilitate engagement initiatives.

Additionally, the Specialist will work with the RISGC Leadership to promote outreach and foster inclusivity, diversity, equity, and accessibility (IDEA) initiatives.


Key Responsibilities:

Develop and implement activities and events in partnership with RI Space Grant Consortium collaborators and organizations to engage diverse communities and ultimately advance the goals and objectives of the RI Space Grant Consortium.

This is a part-time fixed-term position (25 hours per week [67%]) that is fully grant-funded and operates under a four-year award cycle, renewable annually for up to four years from the hire date, contingent upon satisfactory performance and funding availability.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree and a minimum of one year of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Familiarity with scientific disciplines is preferred.

Experience in an academic setting or in a role supporting communications and development, community outreach, events, and programs is preferred.

Strong editing, proofreading, and communication skills are essential.

Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication abilities.

Robust organizational and project management skills.

Knowledge of website development and maintenance on platforms such as WordPress.

Proficiency in MS Office applications, Google Suite platforms, and Zoom.

Familiarity with evolving social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, X, and others as necessary.

Ability to proactively generate new ideas and strategies.

Capacity to prioritize complex and sometimes competing objectives.

Demonstrated initiative and judgment to independently solve problems.

Ability to work with minimal supervision while also being an effective team member.

Capability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive materials.

Skill in developing and executing innovative programming that engages diverse audiences.

Proven ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.


Additional Information:
The incumbent may be required to work occasional evenings and weekends for events.
