Communications Operations Specialist

Job Description:


The Communications Operations Specialist plays a crucial role in managing and coordinating requests for services that are received through the Communication Center. This position involves ensuring an accurate status of all operational units, monitoring various communication channels, and maintaining alarm systems. The specialist is also responsible for keeping detailed logs and initiating communication receipts, along with performing routine administrative tasks as needed.
  • Proficient in operating the base station radio system while adhering to established radio protocols and regulatory standards. The specialist will receive and relay information to various operational units regarding incidents and service requests.
  • Responsible for initiating Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) system inputs to manage incoming information effectively, ensuring all relevant departments are informed of repair needs or follow-ups.
  • Maintain a comprehensive and accurate Radio Log throughout the shift by entering data into the computerized CAD system.
  • Monitor and respond to communications via radio, telephone, and alarm systems, ensuring public safety within the university and surrounding areas.
  • Assess the significance of communications and, following established protocols, take appropriate action while communicating vital information to field officers and relevant authorities, especially during high-activity situations.
  • Prepare and maintain all logs and files as required, providing information to university members and guests while upholding a professional demeanor.
  • Manage the keys for various departments according to written procedures, ensuring the integrity of the key management system in collaboration with the university's locksmith services.
  • Monitor local police and fire department radio frequencies, relaying pertinent information to patrol officers as necessary.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive work environment.

Qualifications
  • Possess a voice that is clear and compatible with radio and telephone systems, able to communicate effectively over law enforcement channels.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage a multifaceted role efficiently.
  • Strong verbal communication skills, capable of interacting effectively with individuals, including youth, by providing clear information and guidance.
  • Proficient typing and computer skills are essential.
  • Ability to compile reports, including sketches, utilizing appropriate grammar and mathematical calculations.
  • Must be at least 18 years old and possess a high school diploma or GED.
  • Successful completion of a physical examination is required.
  • No felony or serious misdemeanor convictions are permitted.
  • Must pass a criminal background check.
  • Completion of the department's Communications Operations training program is mandatory.
  • Must successfully complete a 12-month probationary period, with specific conditions for those transitioning from part-time to full-time roles.
  • Pass an assessment evaluating the skills necessary for dispatching, including both listening and written components.
