Position Summary & Responsibilities

Position Summary: This role involves overseeing correctional operations to ensure order and supervision within the facility. Responsibilities include being assigned as the officer in charge of various units, supervising subordinate staff and residents, and adapting to shift changes as needed. Collaboration with fellow correctional officers at all levels is essential to achieve the facility's objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a secure, orderly, and sanitary environment in all areas of the facility, including living quarters, dining areas, classrooms, and work sites.
  • Conduct and supervise regular counts of residents to ensure accountability, and perform searches to prevent contraband and weapon fabrication.
  • Oversee daily schedules and ensure residents are informed of their assignments and appointments, while enforcing proper procedures during transitions.
  • Work to improve residents' attitudes and behaviors by serving as a positive role model and demonstrating effective communication and professionalism.

Qualifications

  • Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Licensing & Certification: Valid Driver's License
  • Minimum Qualifications: Candidates must meet all requirements for the position, be at least 20 years old, possess 2 years of relevant experience in corrections or detention, and have completed the Corrections Officer Training Program (COTP). Relevant coursework or training may be considered as substitutes at the agency's discretion.
  • Minimum Competencies: Strong organizational skills, effective oral and written communication abilities, and the capacity to establish positive working relationships with colleagues and residents are essential.
  • Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements: Successful completion of a drug screening, physical examination, background check, and submission of a State of Kansas Tax Clearance Certificate are mandatory.
