Position Summary & Responsibilities
Position Summary:
This role involves full-performance corrections work, enforcing established laws, rules, and regulations within a correctional facility. The incumbent will provide functional oversight to junior Corrections Officers. Responsibilities include managing inmate behavior in living, work, or recreational areas at a designated post and offering guidance to lower-level officers assigned to that post. The officer may also participate as a member of a unit team, contributing to the rehabilitation efforts of unit members. This position requires certification as a Corrections Officer and the exercise of delegated statutory powers.
The role demands strong problem-solving abilities, effective oral and written communication skills, and proficient conflict management capabilities. The incumbent must establish and maintain positive working relationships while demonstrating excellent customer service skills. Adaptability to new situations and changes is essential. The position also requires the ability to perform established Essential Physical Functions. An initial probationary period of six months is mandatory for newly promoted employees.
Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
- As a secondary officer, supervise and maintain discipline among residents in their living quarters, during meals, in classrooms, and in various facility areas.
- Conduct searches of residents in various settings to prevent the possession of contraband and the creation of dangerous weapons.
- Inspect physical areas of the facility as directed or proactively to control the presence of contraband in living units and other designated areas.
Qualifications
- Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Licensing & Certification: Valid Driver's License
- Minimum Qualifications: Must fulfill all minimum qualifications and special requirements for COI (A). Additionally, at least one year of relevant experience in corrections or the detention of offenders is required, along with successful completion of the Corrections Officer Training Program (COTP). Relevant college coursework or training in another jurisdiction may be accepted at the agency's discretion.
- Minimum Competencies: Candidates must demonstrate the ability to interact effectively with co-workers, inmates, and external personnel to foster positive working relationships. Strong organizational skills and the ability to operate with minimal supervision are essential.
- Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements: Candidates must successfully complete a drug screening test, a physical examination, a background investigation, and submit a State of Kansas Tax Clearance.
