Overview
Under general oversight, the Senior Laboratory Technician performs routine chemical, biological, or microbiological evaluations of various substances pertinent to the District's treatment operations. This role involves assisting in resolving chemical and research challenges in bacteriology while innovating analytical methodologies.
Primary Duties:
- Oversees, directs, and assesses the work of laboratory technicians; organizes work schedules.
- Facilitates project teams in designated assignments.
- Supervises research initiatives.
- Provides training and guidance to Laboratory Technicians and Assistants.
- Contributes to the development of Standard Operating Procedures and Quality Assurance documentation.
- Conducts sample evaluations adhering to established protocols, including specialized samples.
- Inspects and assesses laboratory apparatus, suggesting maintenance as needed.
- Calculates and compiles analytical reports.
- Monitors laboratory workflow.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Maintains logs for repairs and inventory of equipment and materials.
- Sets up and manages laboratory instruments.
- Prepares calibration standards and reagents.
- Performs other assigned tasks as necessary.
Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Understanding of metric measurements and scientific terminology.
- Comprehensive knowledge of laboratory safety protocols.
- Familiarity with Quality Assurance and Quality Control principles.
- Ability to operate laboratory tools and equipment.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficient in following detailed instructions and performing mathematical calculations.
- Aptitude for maintaining precise records and logs.
- Capacity to coordinate and organize work activities for a team.
Minimum Qualifications:
Completion of high school or equivalent, two years of college coursework in chemistry, biology, or a related scientific discipline, along with three years of experience in a chemical or biological laboratory setting.
Substitution:
Additional college coursework may replace experience, and laboratory experience may substitute for educational requirements.
Promotional Criteria:
- At least one year of service as a Laboratory or Environmental Research Technician within the District.
- Civil service status in related job classifications.
