POSITION SUMMARY

The Athletics and Youth Engagement Specialist plays a vital role in the design, execution, promotion, and assessment of sports and fitness initiatives aimed at youth. This position focuses on athletic activities while also supporting artistic and educational programs. The Specialist is responsible for overseeing club members' participation and fostering an engaging environment. This is a part-time role, scheduled for afternoons from Monday to Friday, totaling 22.5 hours per week.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develops, supervises, and assesses sports and fitness initiatives to ensure member safety and program quality.
  • Creates a supportive atmosphere that encourages the achievement of Youth Development Outcomes.
  • Recognizes and celebrates member participation and accomplishments.
  • Keeps accurate records of attendance and involvement.
  • Suggests new sports initiatives and improvements to current programs.
  • Encourages and boosts participation in programs.
  • Welcomes new members to sports initiatives, special events, and outlines club safety and conduct guidelines.
  • Provides mentorship and exemplifies sportsmanship and fitness principles to members.
  • Engages in training and educational opportunities to enhance knowledge and skills in sports and fitness, as well as participating in club staff meetings.
  • Maintains discipline among club members in accordance with organizational policies.
  • Oversees and trains volunteers and program assistants, particularly in sports-related activities.
  • Assesses supply requirements for sports programs and communicates needs to the Supervisor.
  • Ensures that sports and fitness areas are organized and that informational materials are up to date.
  • Completes and submits all necessary documentation punctually.
  • Identifies and recommends repairs for sports equipment and facilities.
  • May participate in community outreach and event activities related to the club.
  • Collaborates with team members to deliver high-quality programs, assisting in various capacities as needed.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School diploma or GED; at least two years of college experience preferred.
  • Combination of experience and/or formal training equivalent to a minimum of two years, including:
  • Experience working with youth and understanding youth development principles.
  • Formal training and/or experience in teaching youth through engaging sports and fitness activities.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to pass a motor vehicle driving record check.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check.
  • Negative result on a TB test.
  • CPR and First Aid certifications are preferred.
  • Experience in a Boys & Girls Club setting is advantageous.
  • Background in sports coaching or fitness training is preferred.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

  • Understanding of sports, fitness, and youth development.
  • Proficient in planning and implementing quality sports programs, with strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Able to effectively manage member interactions, including disciplinary matters, while building relationships with youth and their families.
  • Demonstrates professionalism in all interactions and can effectively manage a diverse group of youth.
  • Capable of organizing time efficiently and completing tasks with minimal supervision.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

  • Travel between various sites and community locations is required. Must meet the insurance criteria of the organization.
  • Work hours are influenced by the school calendar and attendance trends, requiring evening hours during the school year and varying hours during summer and breaks.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The physical demands and conditions associated with this role include lifting, bending, reaching, climbing, and other physical activities. Frequent interruptions from in-person interactions, phone calls, and emails are expected. The position may involve working in both indoor and outdoor environments, with moderate to high noise levels during activities. Physical exertion may be necessary for lifting supplies and equipment.
