POSITION OVERVIEW

The Citizens Advisory Committee associated with the Lowell Police Department aims to strengthen the relationship between the community and law enforcement. This committee is designed to facilitate public input regarding decisions and practices that pertain to safety within the city. It will consist of nine (9) individuals, including: two high school juniors or seniors; one student from Middlesex Community College; one student from UMass Lowell; one representative from a faith-based organization; one leader from a non-profit or social service entity; one business representative; and two additional community members. Members will act as liaisons, relaying community perspectives on public safety matters to the Police Department. They will also be tasked with reviewing and providing feedback on various topics presented to the committee and, at times, making recommendations to the Chief of Police, City Manager, and City Council.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Participate in monthly meetings at the designated civic center.
  • Support outreach initiatives between law enforcement and the community.
  • Raise public awareness regarding the police department's services, initiatives, and public safety concerns.
  • Gather community input on police services, programs, and public safety issues.
  • Provide constructive feedback and suggestions regarding police programs and activities.
  • Review and offer recommendations on additional matters referred to the committee by the Chief of Police, City Manager, or City Council as needed.
