Position Overview

The Regional Environmental Engineer plays a crucial role in ensuring adherence to environmental regulations and permit obligations while serving as the primary technical authority on engineering and environmental matters for designated sites. This role involves applying engineering methodologies to create detailed reports, perform regular assessments, audits, or inspections of operational processes, gather and evaluate samples, investigate incidents and grievances, and propose necessary corrective measures. The incumbent will oversee both internal and external teams for multidisciplinary initiatives that may extend over several years. As a regional authority, the individual will convey technical insights during public forums, internal training sessions, and industry gatherings.

Compensation Range: From $91,000 to $119,200 annually

Key Responsibilities

  • Conducts regular site visits, gathers data, analyzes results, and interprets findings by generating technical documentation, compiling data, and creating visual representations such as charts and graphs to support facility engineering and compliance initiatives.
  • Works collaboratively with facility management to uphold local, state, and federal permits for assigned locations by identifying permitting requirements, anticipating renewals, preparing, and submitting applications in a timely manner, and managing both electronic and physical document filing.
  • Engages professionally with regulatory bodies, clients, and the public concerning facility permits and environmental compliance.
  • Coordinates and supervises third-party contractors and consultants in executing engineering and construction projects of low to medium complexity, while also participating as a team member in more complex and long-term development projects.
  • Identifies and rectifies compliance challenges by collaborating with facility managers to implement process enhancements and conduct follow-up self-assessments.
  • Assesses the significance of hazards and determines appropriate disposal and management strategies for facility operations.
  • Collaborates with facility and regional management to collect and report data supporting company and facility objectives related to safety, compliance, financial performance, and sustainability.
  • Ensures ongoing compliance with environmental programs by coordinating necessary training and performing self-assessments to guarantee thorough monitoring and environmental sampling by both internal and external resources.
  • Assists in the creation and execution of new or revised environmental resource programs, policies, procedures, and operational methods, providing recommendations for improvements to ensure effective systems and services are established.
  • Participates in training and other educational opportunities to enhance knowledge of the company, its products, sales, and services, and performs any additional duties necessary to support the organization's vision, mission, and core values.

Regional Engineer Manager: Requires 8-10+ years of progressive experience in solid waste, civil/environmental engineering, or a related environmental field. Acts as a leader with expert knowledge of company protocols and state regulations. Communicates technical information effectively in public forums, internal training, and industry conferences. Responsible for managing permitting, compliance, engineering, and regulatory affairs for facilities with complex operations within a designated region. May allocate 20-40% of time to regulatory and legislative matters. Provides guidance to Analysts and Managers within the assigned region and serves as a liaison between the organization and regulatory agencies. Skilled in fostering key partnerships with division, location, region, and corporate leaders.

Education, Experience & Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor's degree in Engineering and 8-10 years of relevant experience in solid waste or a related environmental sector. A demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively within a team-oriented environment is essential. A valid driver's license and the capacity to travel among company regional offices is required.

A strong commitment to workplace safety, sustainability, and environmental compliance, along with a comprehensive understanding of environmental laws and regulations, is necessary. Candidates should exhibit high attention to detail, organizational skills, effective listening, communication, and problem-solving abilities. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications is required.

While not mandatory, an Advanced Degree or certification, Professional Engineering (PE) License, or Fundamentals of Engineering (FE)/Engineer-in-training (EIT) certification is preferred.
