Our Optical Communications division has recently transitioned from merely producing optical fiber and cable, hardware, and equipment to becoming a comprehensive provider of leading optical solutions across the wider communications sector. This division is categorized into two primary product groups - carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group mainly includes products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data, and voice communications. The enterprise network product group primarily consists of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, government entities, and individuals for their own use.

Position Overview:

The ideal candidate will oversee the creation of new processes and products utilizing extrusion or UV curing methods. Familiarity with fiber optic cable processes and/or polymeric materials is advantageous, though not mandatory. The candidate is expected to possess engineering expertise to facilitate new product and process development initiatives. Responsibilities include establishing tooling, equipment, and process design specifications, as well as developing machine set points for optimal manufacturing conditions. Experience in designing and developing continuous manufacturing processes is preferred. This encompasses creating and defining specifications, procuring, developing, implementing, and monitoring equipment and processes as part of the manufacturing system.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Engage in project teams to develop innovative products and processes that address customer needs while generating intellectual property to provide value for Corning.
  • Conduct research, propose experiments, and analyze data to validate hypotheses, enhancing understanding of products and processes, and delivering inventive solutions for new development efforts.
  • Design and develop new equipment or modify and optimize existing machinery. This includes creating and defining specifications, and implementing processes and equipment tailored for manufacturing.
  • Plan and oversee the installation of new equipment.
  • Identify and explore new processing techniques to innovate cable designs.
  • Balance hands-on technical tasks with leadership responsibilities.
  • Guide development technicians in daily activities to meet project milestones.
  • Collect, interpret, and document data in technical reports and presentations.
  • Collaborate with research and manufacturing teams throughout the product development cycle.
  • Maintain strong communication with process development teams located in various regions.
  • Assist and/or lead global product development projects to achieve design and cost reduction objectives.
  • Create new intellectual property for Corning.
  • Interface with suppliers and procurement to develop cutting-edge equipment and processes utilizing both existing and new polymeric materials.
  • Work with suppliers to resolve material-related issues and maintain relationships to stay informed about new material availability.
  • Conduct risk assessments of the equipment and processes in use, focusing on staff safety, plant safety, environmental impact, and customer-related product issues.
Essential Skills:
  • Ability to execute project assignments in a collaborative environment with minimal supervision.
  • Strong problem-solving skills utilizing engineering principles and structured methodologies.
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude.
  • Effective communication of technical ideas.
  • Proficient written and verbal communication skills, with experience in Microsoft Office tools.
  • Capability to manage multiple projects concurrently.
Required Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Materials Engineering with 2+ years of manufacturing or industrial experience. A Master's degree in an engineering discipline is preferred with 0 - 2 years of industrial experience.
  • 0 - 5 years of professional experience with extrusion processes.
Preferred Skills:
  • Experience in computer-aided design for mechanical drawings.
  • Experience in continuous process design and development.
  • Familiarity with polymer extrusion and/or UV curing processes.
  • Ability to perform complex data analysis using MS Excel or statistical software.
  • Experience in project management.
  • Demonstrated use of process modeling or simulation software in new process development.
  • Positive attitude and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Good communication and presentation skills across various levels, including teams and management.
  • Ability to effectively communicate within a global work environment.
  • Strong facilitation and collaboration skills to navigate ambiguous evaluations.
  • Proactive approach: results-driven and detail-oriented.
  • Strong relationship-building skills.
Travel Requirements:
  • Up to 25% (national/international travel may be required).

The salary range for this position is $81,000 to $111,770.00, assuming full-time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on various job-related factors, including geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. Benefits available for this position may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and paid time off.
