Our Optical Communications division has recently transitioned from being a producer of optical fiber and cable, hardware, and equipment to a comprehensive provider of leading optical solutions across the wider communications sector.

This division is categorized into two primary product groups - carrier network and enterprise network.

The carrier network product group mainly comprises products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data, and voice communications.

The enterprise network product group primarily includes optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, government entities, and individuals for their own use.


Position Overview:

The ideal candidate will oversee the development of innovative processes and products utilizing extrusion or UV curing methodologies. Familiarity with fiber optic cable processes and/or polymeric materials is advantageous, though not mandatory. The candidate is expected to possess engineering expertise to support new product and process development initiatives. Responsibilities include establishing tooling, equipment, and process design specifications, as well as developing machine set points for optimal manufacturing conditions. Experience in designing and developing continuous manufacturing processes is preferred.

This role encompasses creating and defining specifications, procuring, developing, implementing, and monitoring equipment and processes as part of the manufacturing system.


Key Responsibilities:
  1. Engage in project teams to develop new products and processes that address customer challenges while generating intellectual property to provide value for Corning.
  2. Conduct research, propose experiments, and analyze data to validate hypotheses aimed at enhancing the understanding of products and processes, delivering inventive solutions for new development efforts.
  3. Design and develop new equipment or modify and optimize existing machinery, including creating and setting specifications, and implementing processes and equipment for manufacturing.
  4. Plan and oversee the installation of new equipment.
  5. Identify and explore new processing techniques to innovate cable designs.
  6. Balance hands-on activities with technical leadership responsibilities.
  7. Guide development technicians in daily activities to meet project milestones.
  8. Collect, interpret, communicate, and document results in technical reports and presentations.
  9. Collaborate with research and manufacturing teams throughout the product development cycle.
  10. Maintain strong communication with process development teams located globally.
  11. Assist and/or lead product development projects to achieve design and cost reduction objectives.
  12. Create new intellectual property for Corning.
  13. Interface with suppliers and procurement to develop cutting-edge equipment and processes utilizing both existing and new polymeric materials.
  14. Work with suppliers to resolve material-related issues and maintain relationships to stay informed about new material availability.
  15. Conduct risk assessments of the equipment and processes employed, considering staff safety, environmental impact, and customer-related product issues.

Required Qualifications:

The candidate must be capable of executing project assignments in a collaborative environment with minimal supervision. Strong problem-solving skills using engineering principles and structured techniques are essential. Demonstrated mechanical aptitude is required, along with the ability to articulate technical ideas clearly. Proficiency in written and verbal communication, particularly with Microsoft Office tools, is necessary. The ability to manage multiple projects concurrently is also essential.


Educational Background:

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Materials Engineering with a minimum of 2 years of manufacturing or industrial experience. A Master's degree in an engineering discipline is preferred, with 0 - 2 years of industrial experience in extrusion.


Preferred Skills:

Experience in computer-aided design for mechanical drawings, continuous process design and development, and polymer extrusion and/or UV curing processes is desirable. Proficiency in complex data analysis using MS Excel (SPC) or statistical software such as JMP or Minitab is advantageous. Experience in project management and demonstrated use of process modeling or simulation software in developing new processes is beneficial. Strong soft skills, including communication, teamwork, and leadership, are essential. A positive attitude and effective communication skills at various levels, including teams, management, and customers, are crucial. The ability to communicate effectively in a global work environment and strong facilitation and collaboration skills to navigate ambiguous evaluations are important.


Travel Requirements:

Up to 25% (national/international).


This position does not support immigration sponsorship. The compensation range for this position is $81,000 to $111,770.00, assuming full-time status. Starting pay for the successful candidate will depend on various job-related factors, including geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
