Position Overview

As an Advanced Pharmacy Technician at UT Health San Antonio, you will play a vital role in a clinical environment, delivering specialized support related to the management, monitoring, and administration of pharmaceutical products, including investigational medications that necessitate meticulous handling to ensure their safe and effective use. You will adhere to established workflows, including prescription processing, medication preparation, and patient distribution, all under the guidance of a licensed pharmacist, while upholding professional standards and practices.

Key Responsibilities
  • Execute all responsibilities of a Pharmacy Technician I.
  • Assist the clinical pharmacist by performing various clinical tasks, such as patient consultations, medication safety initiatives, follow-up communications, and gathering clinical data.
  • Ensure the efficient operation and troubleshooting of specialized equipment and software necessary for job functions.
  • Balance individual tasks while providing support to team members and contributing to overall team objectives with minimal oversight.
  • Prepare intravenous solutions using aseptic techniques and compound non-sterile medications as required.
  • Facilitate the training of new staff and students, imparting essential job-specific knowledge.
  • Restock automated dispensing units and anesthesia stations as necessary.
  • Manage incoming calls, directing inquiries to the appropriate personnel when needed.
  • Handle medications in compliance with departmental, regulatory, and legal standards.
  • Collaborate with pharmacy team members, insurance providers, and customers to resolve issues and ensure accurate and timely medication delivery.
  • Provide basic technical support for specialized equipment and software essential for job functions.
  • Complete and document all assigned safety and quality assurance tasks in accordance with departmental protocols.
  • Prepare and compound non-sterile medications at designated locations.
  • Support team members while managing personal responsibilities and contributing to broader team goals.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Comprehensive knowledge of pharmaceutical terminology, drug names, and calculations.
  • Ability to operate and maintain automated dispensing systems and related equipment.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, ensuring accuracy and thoroughness in all tasks.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Capability to navigate situations involving uncertainty and rapid changes.
  • Solid customer service skills to effectively engage with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Proficient in computer applications relevant to pharmacy operations.
  • Critical thinking skills with the ability to devise effective solutions.
  • Strong organizational skills, effectively managing time and resources to meet job expectations.
Education Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of an accredited pharmacy technician training program.
  • Preferred acceptance into a pharmacy school.
Experience Requirements
  • A minimum of three years of experience in a pharmacy setting is required.
  • At least one year of experience as a pharmacy technician is preferred.
  • Experience in sterile compounding is preferred.
Licensure and Certification
  • Registered with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy in good standing.
  • Certification from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board or the Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT) is required.
  • Certification in sterile compounding (IV certification) is required.
