Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform strictly non-judgmental technical tasks under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist.
Operational Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist pharmacists in gathering medication histories.
  • Train and evaluate the competencies of junior pharmacy technicians.
  • Prepare medication orders as per physician requests, adhering to established protocols.
  • Ensure accuracy in computerized patient medication records and maintain comprehensive patient drug records.
  • Compound pharmaceuticals, including both sterile and non-sterile products, accurately.
  • Manage the issuance of controlled substances to patient care areas, maintaining compliance with legal and institutional requirements.
  • Deliver services promptly and efficiently.
  • Supervise pharmacy support staff and verify the completion of departmental activities.
  • Maintain the necessary competencies for the current position.
  • Keep current with technician licensure and ensure continuing education records are up to date.
  • Maintain IV certification and competencies.
  • Complete all required competency assessments.
  • Analyze medication use processes and contribute to at least one related project annually.
  • Specialty area responsibilities include serving as the lead technician in specific areas such as the operating room or IV room.
  • Provide ambulatory pharmaceutical care services as assigned.
  • Perform outpatient functions related to prescription orders and medication delivery.
  • Utilize advanced knowledge of inventory management to ensure cleanliness and proper medication levels.
Clinical Duties and Responsibilities:
Ensure safe, effective, and economical drug therapies for patients in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Accurately interpret information from patient medical records.
  • Identify and report suspected adverse drug reactions promptly.
  • Support the hospital's drug formulary by minimizing non-formulary procurements.
  • Provide timely and accurate drug information to pharmacy associates.
  • Coordinate pharmacist-led drug education for patients and their families.
  • Engage in quality improvement and medication review activities, maintaining necessary documentation.
  • Conduct designated clinical interventions as defined by departmental protocols.
  • Participate in stewardship activities as assigned.
  • Deliver services efficiently and in a timely manner.
Occupational Hazards:
  • Potential exposure to hazardous substances, including chemotherapeutic agents.
  • Risk of injury from needles and sharp instruments.
  • Potential for musculoskeletal injuries if proper lifting techniques are not followed.
Qualifications:

A. Education/Skills

High School diploma or equivalent is required.

B. Experience

Minimum of 2 years as a Pharmacy Tech II with CHRISTUS or 5 years of pharmacy technician experience.

C. Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications

Registered pharmacy technician in the state of practice is required. Certification as a pharmacy technician is preferred. Completion of an ACPE accredited IV certification program is necessary.
