• Pharmacy Technicians are responsible for performing strictly technical tasks under the direct oversight of a pharmacist.
Operational Duties and Responsibilities
• Assist Pharmacists in gathering Medication Histories.
• Provide training to Pharmacy Technician I associates.
• Prepare medication orders as per physician requests, following established protocols and procedures.
• Accurately verify computerized patient medication records and maintain comprehensive patient drug records.
• Compound pharmaceuticals, including both non-sterile and sterile products, as well as chemotherapy and parenteral nutrition products, with precision.
• Distribute controlled substances to patient care areas and maintain records in compliance with legal and institutional requirements.
• Deliver services promptly and efficiently.
• Ensure that daily departmental activities are completed and documented.
• Maintain the necessary competencies for the current job title/position.
• Keep current technician license and ensure that continuing education records are up to date in departmental files. Attend staff meetings regularly.
• Maintain IV certification and competencies.
• Complete all required competency and skills assessments.
• Specialty Areas
• Serve as a technician in specialized areas such as the operating room, IV room, or other pharmacy work areas outside the central pharmacy.
• Ambulatory Care
• Provide ambulatory pharmaceutical care services as assigned, including but not limited to anticoagulation clinics, intensive medical home, and discharge medication reconciliation.
• Retail
• Execute outpatient distributive functions related to entering prescription orders, selecting appropriate medications for new and refilled prescriptions, and coordinating medication delivery for patient pick-up or delivery.
Clinical Duties and Responsibilities
• Ensure safe, appropriate, and cost-effective drug therapies for patients in accordance with established policies and protocols.
• Accurately read, extract, and interpret information from patient medical records.
• Identify and report suspected adverse drug reactions in a timely manner.
• Support the hospital drug formulary by minimizing non-formulary procurements and promoting rational drug therapy selection.
• Provide accurate and timely drug information to pharmacy associates.
• Coordinate pharmacist-led drug education for patients and their families as per institutional guidelines.
• Participate in quality improvement and medication use review activities within the department. Collect data, conduct monitoring and inspections, and maintain logs and records as assigned.
• Conduct designated interventions as defined in departmental Clinical Intervention activities (IV to PO, Renal Dosing, Pharmacokinetic dosing support, Anticoagulation).
• Establish departmental standards for reporting interventions related to clinical productivity as defined by departmental goals.
• Deliver services efficiently and in a timely manner.
Occupational Hazards
• Potential exposure to hazardous and toxic substances (including chemotherapeutic and cytotoxic drugs, as well as cleaning solutions), and risks associated with needles and other sharp instruments.
• Risk category 0 exposure.
• Potential for musculoskeletal injuries if proper lifting techniques are not employed. Possible exposure to biological materials during direct patient care activities (e.g., patient education, code attendance).
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- 3-5 years of experience as a pharmacy technician preferred.
- Must meet all criteria for Pharmacy Technician I.
- Registered Pharmacy Technician in the state of practice required.
- Certification as a Pharmacy Technician preferred.
- Completion of an ACPE accredited IV certification program, including hazardous (minimum 40 hours); or meet minimum state requirements. Not applicable to Ambulatory Care or Retail settings.
