Responsibilities

The Senior Pharmacy Technician plays a crucial role in supporting pharmacists by executing supervised tasks related to the preparation and distribution of pharmaceutical services. This position involves various technical duties that do not necessitate professional oversight. Key responsibilities include:

  • Locating, dispensing, packaging, and labeling medications, which are subsequently verified for accuracy by a pharmacist prior to patient distribution.
  • Receiving and stocking incoming pharmaceutical supplies and medications.
  • Creating intravenous infusions in a sterile environment using aseptic techniques.
  • Utilizing effective written and verbal communication skills to interact with hospital personnel.
  • Accessing the Hospital Information System via computer.
  • Maintaining and operating essential pharmacy equipment, reporting any malfunctioning devices.
  • Ensuring adequate medication and supply levels throughout the hospital.
  • Employing proper body mechanics when lifting heavy equipment and medical supplies weighing 50 lbs or more.
  • Restocking work areas as necessary.
  • Adhering to compliance requirements and organizational policies, including confidentiality (HIPAA) and dress code.
  • Utilizing aseptic techniques to compound sterile medications, with proficiency in calculating and measuring dosages.
  • Demonstrating consistency in punctuality, attendance, and performance.
  • Maintaining licensure and certifications from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB/NHA).
  • Exhibiting a professional and collaborative demeanor.
  • Preparing restocks for automated dispensing cabinets, ensuring pharmacist verification.
  • Receiving daily narcotic orders and managing inventory, including usage, par levels, returns, repackaging, expiration, and reordering.
  • Communicating with auditors and resolving discrepancies as necessary.
  • Assisting with additional pharmacy duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Applicants must possess a high school diploma or equivalent, hold a current registry with the Alabama State Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician, and be IV trained and certified by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board. A minimum of two years of experience as a Pharmacy Technician is highly preferred.
