Position Overview

Under general supervision, this role involves engaging in complex and responsible engineering review and inspection tasks within the specialized domain of fire safety and prevention, providing guidance to fire inspection teams involved in fire safety initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

- Conduct thorough reviews of fire protection plans and systems, equivalency proposals, permit applications, and site maps to ensure adherence to relevant codes, ordinances, and standards.

- Assess architectural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing plans for compliance with fire safety regulations, ensuring that fire code requirements are integrated where hazardous materials are present.

- Offer training and technical support to Fire Department personnel on applicable codes and engineering principles related to fire prevention and safety.

- Perform inspections and oversee acceptance tests for fire protection systems, participating in construction inspections to verify compliance with approved fire safety plans.

- Collaborate with contractors, architects, engineers, and other agencies on fire code and safety matters, conducting educational sessions and life-safety demonstrations.

- Review and adapt fire protection codes and standards from other jurisdictions for local application, contributing to the development and revision of fire safety regulations.

- Provide expert guidance on the design and testing of new fire-fighting equipment and materials, ensuring their effectiveness and compliance with safety standards.

- Investigate fire incidents to determine potential failures in safety systems, preparing detailed reports as necessary.

- Evaluate performance-based analyses to ensure proposed fire protection systems meet the intent of established codes and standards.

Qualifications

This position is open to candidates who meet the following criteria:

Education:

Possession of a bachelor's degree in fire protection, mechanical, electrical, chemical, or civil engineering, or a related field from an accredited institution.

Experience:

A minimum of six (6) years of professional experience in fire protection analysis, including building design, specification development, construction inspection, and plan review.

Licenses and Certifications:

A valid Driver's License and a Fire Protection Engineer license issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers.

Substitution:

A degree in fire protection engineering may substitute for one (1) year of required experience. A valid registration as a Fire Protection Engineer from another state may also be accepted.
