Position Overview:
This role is integral to the mission of the San José Fire Department (SJFD), which is dedicated to safeguarding the community by ensuring the protection of life, property, and the environment through proactive measures and responsive actions.

Department Background:
SJFD operates as a comprehensive, high-capacity Fire Department, covering approximately 200 square miles that encompass various environments, including residential, commercial, and high-hazard areas.

Role Summary:
The Bureau of Fire Prevention (BFP) is currently seeking to fill two (2) Associate Engineer positions. The BFP Development Division plays a crucial role in fulfilling the Department's objectives, focusing on public education, fire investigation, and compliance with safety codes.

Key Responsibilities:
Under the guidance of a Senior Engineer, the Associate Engineer will undertake a range of professional engineering tasks, including:

  • Reviewing plans and specifications for various building types to ensure adherence to the California Building Code, California Fire Code, and other relevant regulations.
  • Providing expert technical guidance to architects, engineers, contractors, and other stakeholders regarding fire safety regulations and compliance.
  • Evaluating proposals for alternative construction methods and materials in relation to fire safety standards.
  • Conducting field inspections to verify that completed construction aligns with approved plans.

This recruitment may be utilized to fill multiple positions across different divisions or departments.

Compensation:
The salary range for this classification is $125,000 to $158,318.16, which includes an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable pay. Actual salary will be determined based on the qualifications and experience of the final candidates.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education: A Bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering discipline (e.g., Fire Protection, Mechanical, Electrical, Civil) or possession of an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certificate.
Experience: A minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible professional engineering experience.
Acceptable Substitution: A Master's degree in a relevant engineering discipline may substitute for one (1) year of professional engineering experience.

Licenses/Certificates:
A valid State of California driver's license is required.

Competencies:
The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of applicable engineering principles and practices.
  • Familiarity with codes and standards related to building safety and fire protection.
  • Experience in reviewing building plans for compliance with fire safety regulations.
  • Expertise in the design and inspection of fire/life safety systems.
