Currently, the City and County of San Francisco provides essential fire suppression, prevention, and emergency medical services to a diverse population of approximately 1.5 million residents and visitors across its 49 square miles.
Position OverviewUnder general supervision, this role involves performing complex and responsible engineering evaluations and inspections within the specialized domain of fire safety and prevention. The incumbent will offer guidance to fire inspection personnel engaged in fire safety initiatives.
Key Responsibilities- Evaluate fire protection plans and systems, equivalency proposals, and permit applications to ensure adherence to relevant codes, ordinances, and standards.
- Review architectural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing plans for compliance with fire codes, ensuring safety measures are in place for hazardous materials.
- Provide training and technical support to Fire Department personnel regarding applicable codes and engineering principles related to fire prevention.
- Conduct inspections and oversee acceptance tests for fire protection systems, ensuring compliance with approved plans.
- Engage with contractors, architects, engineers, and other stakeholders to address fire code and safety issues, delivering presentations and demonstrations as needed.
- Analyze and review fire protection standards from other jurisdictions for potential local application and assist in the development of new codes and ordinances.
- Offer professional guidance in the design and testing of new fire-fighting equipment and materials.
- Investigate fire incidents to assess potential failures in safety systems and prepare detailed reports.
- Perform evaluations of performance-based designs to ensure they meet code requirements and communicate findings to relevant officials.
This position is open to candidates who meet the following minimum qualifications:
Education:Possession of a bachelor's degree in fire protection, mechanical, electrical, chemical, or civil engineering, or a related field from an accredited institution.
Experience:A minimum of six (6) years of professional experience in fire protection analysis, including building design, specification development, construction oversight, and plan review.
Licenses and Certifications:A valid Driver's License and a Fire Protection Engineer license issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers.
Substitution:A degree in fire protection engineering may substitute for one (1) year of required experience. A valid registration as a Fire Protection Engineer from another state may also be considered.
