Position Overview

Under general supervision, this role involves complex and responsible professional engineering evaluation and inspection tasks within the specialized domain of fire safety and prevention, offering guidance to fire inspection personnel engaged in fire safety initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

1. Evaluate fire protection plans and systems, equivalency proposals, permit applications, and site maps to ensure adherence to relevant codes, ordinances, and standards.

2. Review architectural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing plans for compliance with fire safety regulations, ensuring that fire code provisions are incorporated where hazardous materials are present.

3. Provide training and technical support to fire department personnel on applicable codes and technical aspects of fire prevention, including plan review and research.

4. Conduct inspections and acceptance tests for fire protection systems, participating in building inspections during construction to verify compliance with approved plans.

5. Engage with the public, including contractors, architects, and other agencies, regarding fire code and safety standards, delivering lectures and organizing life-safety demonstrations.

6. Review and assess fire protection codes and standards from other jurisdictions for potential local implementation, assisting in the development and revision of local codes and ordinances.

7. Provide expert guidance on the design and testing of new fire-fighting equipment and materials.

8. Investigate fire sites to determine causes and failures related to structural, mechanical, or safety systems, preparing necessary reports.

9. Analyze performance-based designs to ensure compliance with codes and standards, communicating findings to relevant officials.

Qualifications

This position is open to candidates who meet the following minimum qualifications:

Education:

Possession of a bachelor's degree in fire protection, mechanical, electrical, chemical, or civil engineering, or a related field from an accredited institution.

Experience:

A minimum of six (6) years of professional experience in fire protection analysis, including building design, specification writing, construction inspection, and plan review.

Licenses and Certifications:

A valid Driver's License and a Fire Protection Engineer license issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers.

Substitution:

A degree in fire protection engineering may substitute for one (1) year of required experience. A valid registration as a Fire Protection Engineer from another state may also be considered.
