Position Overview

Peer Specialist - A vital role within the supportive housing sector, focusing on empowering young adults facing mental health challenges.

Reporting Structure: This position reports directly to the Program Director.

Work Schedule: Full-Time, requiring 35 hours per week, with flexibility for afternoon and evening shifts.

Compensation: Salary set at $35,000 annually.

Employment Classification: Non-Exempt under FLSA guidelines.

About Us: Brooklyn Community Services (BCS) has been dedicated to enhancing the lives of children and families since 1866. With a commitment to fostering self-sufficiency and resilience, BCS operates across 28 locations, serving over 20,000 individuals each year.

Program Focus: The Cortelyou program is designed to support young adults aged 18-25 who are experiencing serious mental health issues and have a history of homelessness. The program is particularly inclusive of the LGBTQ+ community, providing a safe and affirming environment to promote long-term stability.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with program staff to assist residents in essential life skills, including budgeting, meal planning, and maintaining a clean living space.
  • Engage with community partners to address barriers affecting residents' housing stability.
  • Document progress notes promptly following individual sessions.
  • Accompany clients to various appointments as directed.
  • Facilitate participation in community activities to enhance social skills.
  • Connect clients with peer support and recovery resources.
  • Provide education on public transportation usage.
  • Lead or co-lead group sessions as assigned.
  • Assist in the coordination of resident transitions.
  • Offer support to community residents and local social programs.
  • Participate in safety drills and training sessions.
  • Attend all required meetings and complete assigned tasks as directed by the Program Director.

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) is required.
  • Peer specialist certification is preferred.
  • Experience working with LGBTQIIA youth is essential.
  • Candidates must have personal experience with homelessness.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are necessary.
  • Basic computer proficiency and data entry skills are required.
  • A commitment to supporting others in their recovery journey is crucial.
  • Background checks, including OMH fingerprinting, are mandatory.
