Job Summary

ICL is seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Peer Support Specialist to join our team. As a Peer Support Specialist, you will serve as a role model, educator, and advocate for individuals with mental health conditions. Your primary responsibility will be to provide supportive counseling and assistance to service recipients, helping them to achieve their goals and maintain independent living.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide supportive counseling and assistance to service recipients, helping them to develop and maintain viable living, working, and social situations.
  • Teach effective coping strategies and symptom management skills based on personal experience.
  • Assist service recipients in clarifying rehabilitation and recovery goals, and develop community support systems and networks.
  • Participate in crisis intervention services and provide support during emergency situations.
  • Travel to recipients' residences or apartments to provide counsel and assistance.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date individual case records and provide regular updates to supervisors.
  • Assist service recipients in obtaining and developing resource information, and provide clear and understandable explanations of available services.
  • Advocate on behalf of service recipients with outside service providers and within ICL.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Currently certified or obtain a Peer Specialist certification (provisional or professional) within a year of hire, with experience as a recipient of mental health services.
  • Currently certified or obtain a Recovery Peer Advocate certification from the NY Certification Board within a year of hire, with experience as a recipient of mental health services.
  • Experience with homelessness or the criminal justice system is also preferred.
