The Community Research Engagement Specialist will facilitate research initiatives under the guidance of a Principal Investigator or their designated representative. This role is integral to the REACH Equity Team, which is dedicated to tackling disparities in HIV and behavioral health affecting key populations, particularly focusing on Latino men who have sex with men (MSM).

This is a full-time, in-person position at the School of Nursing and Health Studies. The role involves community engagement at various sites to fulfill the objectives of the research.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

Conducts research, gathers, evaluates, and synthesizes data while maintaining comprehensive databases. Performs quality assurance checks and provides updates on research progress. Organizes and facilitates community working group meetings for protocol activities. Acts as the primary liaison for community partners and oversees data collection at community venues. Reviews project developments, identifies opportunities for improvement, and suggests actionable solutions. Prepares and revises research procedure manuals. Contributes to the dissemination of significant findings through publications and presentations. Maintains research documentation and manages inquiries on the research study line. Complies with University policies and safeguards institutional assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., public health, communications, community health, psychology, sociology, nursing, or related fields)

Certification and Licensing:

Experience:

Previous experience in a related role (e.g., recruitment for studies, outreach for community programs, community engagement for research or programs) is preferred but not mandatory.

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

Ability to manage competing priorities and meet multiple deadlines across various projects. Willingness to work evenings, nights, and weekends as required and pre-approved by a supervisor. Capability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment. Proficiency in handling confidential information with care. Skills in engaging with community members and organizations serving Latino MSM. Familiarity with graphic design software (e.g., Canva, PhotoShop) is preferred but not essential.

DEPARTMENT ADDENDUM

Department Specific Functions

The Community Research Engagement Specialist will support various projects:

JUNTOS Referral Network: This initiative involves a centralized database of HIV prevention and treatment services tailored for Latino MSM. The role includes recruiting HIV test counselors and screening potential participants for the study.

Dime Más: This pilot trial compares strategies to enhance the outreach of PrEP, HIV testing, and behavioral health services to Latino MSM. The specialist will assist in recruiting participants through community events and venues.

Community Advisory Board: The REACH Equity Team collaborates with a Community Advisory Board comprising Latino MSM who provide insights on projects and engage in community service activities. The specialist will coordinate CAB meetings and maintain communication with members.

Other projects may arise that require support from the Community Research Engagement Specialist, including adapting interventions to meet the needs of Latino MSM. The goal of this position is to be an integral part of the research team, focusing on recruitment, outreach, and community engagement to ensure successful research outcomes.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Identify and engage with events, venues, and organizations to recruit participants for studies. Coordinate recruitment activities for team members at larger events. Maintain an active recruitment schedule aligned with study requirements. Utilize social and sexual networking platforms for recruitment and outreach. Systematically document all recruitment efforts and outcomes to identify effective practices. Conduct recruitment activities during non-traditional hours as coordinated with a supervisor. Collaborate with individuals supporting recruitment for specific projects. Assist in developing and maintaining a lab website for public accessibility of ongoing projects. Create various materials to support recruitment and community engagement efforts. Plan and coordinate all aspects of the Community Advisory Board, including recruitment and retention of members. Screen and enroll participants for research studies, ensuring accurate documentation of data. Attend lab and project-specific meetings to report on recruitment and outreach activities. Communicate effectively in both English and Spanish for the responsibilities outlined above.
