Head of Risk Management Strategy

The Risk Management division plays a crucial role in evaluating and mitigating various risk factors across diverse asset classes and investment vehicles, collaborating closely with all investment teams at the University of Texas Investment Management Co.

This division is also tasked with creating tools, metrics, and methodologies to comprehend, monitor, and manage risks associated with both traditional and alternative investment strategies.

Key responsibilities will encompass assessing and analyzing portfolio risk, sensitivity, and attribution metrics across a multi-asset class portfolio.
The individual will leverage quantitative expertise and market insights to refine the asset allocation and portfolio strategy functions of the organization.

The selected candidate will report directly to the Managing Director of Investment Risk Management and support other Managing Directors in their risk evaluations.


Core Responsibilities Include:
  • Oversee risk management through quantitative evaluations of market exposures.
  • Utilize knowledge of portfolio risk, particularly in relation to market trends, economic forecasts, and industry developments.
  • Design and implement automated systems for data aggregation, cleansing, and transformation to enhance risk analytics and reporting for Investment Teams.
  • Create analytical frameworks tailored to specific asset classes to better quantify inherent risks and improve the overall Endowment and portfolio construction process.
  • Negotiate contracts on behalf of the organization, including NDAs, Trading Documents, and Customized Data and Service Agreements.
  • Investigate current industry trends in risk management, asset allocation, and portfolio strategy, providing recommendations for portfolio enhancement.
  • Prepare and deliver comprehensive analyses of various asset classes, detailing their role in the Endowment and the associated risk profile/diversification impact on the Endowment portfolio to the Investment Committee.
  • Engage in due diligence processes for investment managers.
  • Network with other Endowment risk managers to remain informed about industry-leading Risk Management practices.
  • Monitor and ensure that the overall portfolio's risk and underlying exposures align with policy, advising the investment team on risks associated with derivatives.
  • Develop and implement standardized internal risk management processes.
  • Create models to assess and manage investments and derivatives.

Qualifications:
  • 10-15 years of experience in investment or market-related roles, leading to a comprehensive understanding of market infrastructure and insights into potential market behavior.
  • Master's degree or PhD in finance, economics, sciences, mathematics, or engineering from a recognized institution.
  • Proficient in analytical and financial applications (e.g., Matlab, Python, R, SQL, or similar tools).
  • Prior experience with probabilities, statistics, and empirical analysis.
  • Experience managing risk within an investment portfolio that includes multiple asset classes, utilizing external holdings-based risk management systems.
  • Familiarity with financial markets and investment management.
  • Extensive knowledge of investment derivatives and derivative modeling.
  • Unquestionable integrity, honesty, and transparency.
  • Temperament suited for a respectful, collegial, and collaborative work environment.
  • A proven track record of success, sound judgment, and intellectual curiosity.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, writing, presentation, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to complete assignments independently and in a timely manner.
  • Capacity to function as a team member to achieve broader organizational goals.
  • Ability to present in front of large groups on various Risk Management topics.
