Job Overview:

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Program Manager, the intern will engage in semi-skilled labor tasks as assigned, utilizing hand tools and assisting in the collection of data, monitoring, and reporting on various environmental standards. The role involves employing sonar technology to evaluate the condition of municipal utility assets and participating in stormwater outreach initiatives during community events. The intern is expected to demonstrate sound judgment, independence, initiative, and professional expertise in daily operations. All tasks must adhere to the safety regulations and operational policies of the City and Utility, as well as comply with federal, state, and local laws.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES include effective interaction with the public, city employees, and external agencies with patience, respect, and professionalism, as well as the following duties. Additional responsibilities may be assigned:
  • Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills during presentations, meetings, phone calls, and emails;
  • Maintain a high level of energy and enthusiasm when engaging with the public;
  • Conduct field reconnaissance to gather necessary data;
  • Prepare preliminary reports;
  • Complete the required training modules;
  • Work independently and collaboratively using sonar equipment to assess the condition of municipal utility assets;
  • Assist in stormwater field investigations, mapping, and inspections of facilities;
  • Contribute to the development and updating of Standard Operating Procedures;
  • Support field mapping and GIS utility infrastructure mapping efforts;
  • Assist with general research, data tracking systems, and filing systems;
  • Participate in public outreach events, education, communication, and marketing for stormwater pollution prevention;
  • Assist with updates and compliance tracking for the Stormwater Quality Management Plan;
  • Support other fieldwork as required;
  • Complete miscellaneous assignments as needed.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean and organized manner;
  • Report any irregularities or abnormal conditions;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

The intern is responsible for managing their performance in alignment with this job description and the expectations set by management. If there is any uncertainty regarding their role or specific responsibilities, it is the intern's duty to refer to their job description and seek clarification from their supervisor. Management will provide support as needed to ensure that performance expectations are clearly communicated and that performance goals are met.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED);
  • Ability to understand work processes, methods, and the use of equipment and machinery;
  • Ability to pass a post-offer agility test for this position.
LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uncomplicated written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The incumbent must have the ability to work under adverse conditions including extremes of temperature, humidity, precipitation, and dust. Exposure to dust and extreme temperature or severe outdoor weather conditions may occur.
