The Transfer Center serves as the primary contact point for all direct admissions, consults, and transport requests. Our certified EMTs, Paramedics, LPNs, and CNAs, recognized by the International Association of Medical Transport Communication Specialists (IAMTCS), provide essential services to both our internal staff and external referral providers. The Communication Specialists manage approximately 2500 phone and radio communications daily, addressing requests for direct admissions, Emergency Department referrals, neonatal/pediatric transport teams, subspecialist consultations, and various other responsibilities.

The Transfer Center is a pivotal hub for the Children's Mercy Critical Care Transport Team, one of the leading neonatal/pediatric specialty teams in the nation for over a decade. Certified Flight Communicators (CFC) are responsible for receiving initial transport requests, connecting referral providers with the appropriate medical control physician, dispatching teams via various transport methods, and maintaining continuous communication throughout the transport process. Our dedicated staff ensures the safety and effectiveness of our Critical Care Transport teams across all transport modes.

This role involves assisting community providers and internal physicians with urgent and non-urgent requests for specialty consultations, inpatient admissions, and Emergency Department referrals, as well as coordinating the dispatch of the CMH Critical Care Transport team. The Communication Specialist also tracks and manages communication with the transport team during missions, embodying a collaborative team approach.

At Children's Mercy, we are dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment for all. A successful candidate will contribute to our mission of creating a workplace that mirrors the community we serve, guided by our core values of kindness, curiosity, inclusion, teamwork, and integrity.

Furthermore, we prioritize transparency with all potential candidates. New hires must be prepared to receive vaccinations if found non-immune to measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), and chickenpox (varicella), and/or without proof of tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccination since 2005. If you are selected as a finalist for this position and have concerns regarding these vaccinations, medical and/or religious exemptions can be discussed with Human Resources.
