Kansas City, Missouri, United States Children's Mercy Full time

Position Overview

Work Schedule:

Three 12-hour shifts per week

Limited Weekend Duties on Friday/Saturday

Holiday Duty Rotation

The Transfer Center serves as the primary contact point for all direct admissions, consultations, and transport requests. Certified EMTs, Paramedics, LPNs, and CNAs, recognized by the International Association of Medical Transport Communication Specialists (IAMTCS), operate within the Transfer Center to provide essential services to our internal staff while also acting as the initial contact for external referral providers. The Communication Specialists manage approximately 2500 phone and radio communications daily, which include requests for direct admissions, referrals to the Emergency Department, neonatal/pediatric transport team requests, consultations with subspecialists, and various other responsibilities.

The Transfer Center is the hub of the Children's Mercy Critical Care Transport Team, one of the busiest neonatal/pediatric specialty teams in the nation for over a decade. Certified Flight Communicators (CFC) handle the initial requests for our team, facilitating communication between the referral provider and the appropriate medical control physician at Children's Mercy. They are responsible for dispatching the team via jet, turbo prop airplane, helicopter, or ground ambulance, notifying pilots, conducting weather checks, and maintaining GPS tracking and continuous communication throughout the transport process. The dedicated staff of the Transfer Center provides ongoing support and resources to ensure the safety of our Critical Care Transport teams across all modes of transport and missions.

This role involves assisting community providers and internal physicians with urgent and non-urgent requests for specialty consultations, inpatient admissions, Emergency Department referrals, and dispatching the CMH Critical Care Transport team. The position also includes accepting patients into the Emergency Department on behalf of the attending physician, tracking and coordinating ground and flight communications, and supporting the transport team during missions. Collaboration and teamwork are essential in this role.

At Children's Mercy, we are dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment where everyone feels welcome. A successful candidate will align with our commitment to creating a workplace that reflects the community we serve, upholding our core values of kindness, curiosity, inclusion, teamwork, and integrity.

Furthermore, we prioritize transparency with all potential candidates. To ensure the safety of our patients, families, and staff, the seasonal influenza and COVID-19 vaccinations are mandatory for all employees. New hires must be prepared to receive vaccinations if found non-immune to measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), and chicken pox (varicella), as well as provide evidence of tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccination since 2005. If you are selected as a finalist for this position and have concerns regarding these vaccinations, medical and/or religious exemptions can be discussed with Human Resources.

Key Responsibilities

  • Triage and process all urgent and non-urgent requests from providers for transports, direct admissions, Emergency Department referrals, and consultations.
  • Implement quality improvement measures and lean standard work to enhance communication regarding patient care.
  • Engage in continuing education and professional development to broaden knowledge, improve role performance, and enhance patient placement and throughput.
